Hi Everyone

I have a difficult question I thought you guys could shed some light on. When I get asked questions like "oh, you play ______? Are you any good?" in a casual setting by a peer/girl/whatever, what should my answer be?

Typically if I'm absolutely terrible at whatever it is (like singing) I'll reply somewhat along the lines of: "Oh, do you sing too?" "Yeah, voice of an angel" "Really? you don't seem like the kind of guy who'd be into that." "well, my closet full of grammy's would disagree"

By this point they generally get the idea I'm fucking with them, but I really have no idea what the best approach is when I'm decent or really good at something.

"Hey, you play tennis right? Are you any good?" "Yeah I'm alright" (I really am an 'alright' tennis player) "Oh. cool"

That kind of conversation is really boring compared to the first one. I don't really want to say something like

"yeah", pulls out phone and answers call "fuck off Federer... No, not right now... just hit it against the wall"

then falling back afterwards and saying something like "nah, just kidding, I'm ok", seems really weak.

Alternatively, If I say something like "no I'm fucking awful" it's more interesting than saying "I'm alright", but not true.

Lastly, if I'm really fucking good at something, what should I say? Should I flaunt it or acknowledge and move on? For example, I know an absolute ton of stuff about photography.

If I get asked;

"oh, you seem to know a lot about photography, do you take good photos?"

What should I say?

"Yes I studied the shit out of this for over a year. I take fucking great photos."

"Yeah, I'm alright I guess, all the study really pays off"

The first one comes off as being a bit of a dick, but the second comes off as really beta and uninteresting. Am I just missing the balance?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but askseddit isn't really all that populated and I'd love to hear some opinions here.
