Opinions on using a wingwoman

I'm just going to copy and paste from the first story I submitted to workshop in my MFA:

We were at a stoplight party in the East Village organized for young professionals, and I went on the invitation of two girls I’d just started work with. If you’ve ever gone out with a girl as your wingman, then you probably know that girls are terrible wingmen. Most girls find this notion to be counterintuitive to the point of absurdity. Who knows what girls want better than other girls? That logic has some appeal to it. That is, until you see a girl wingman in action. Having never even contemplated picking up a girl before, girls have absolutely no idea what the game looks like from the other side. It’s like going deer hunting and instead of bringing along another veteran hunter, you decide to take a deer with you, because hey, who knows where the deer will be better than another deer, right? Best case scenario though is you’ve got a doe in heat and it decides to piss on your boots.

I've heard stories of wingwoman being phenomenal. However, i've never had a good one. In my situation it is just my drunk friend who insists on helping me when I don't even ask for help.

"HEY, HEY YOU!!! THIS IS MY FRIEND YAKOB AND I GUESS HE LIKES YOU OR SOMETHING!!!"

It boils down to experience. I think I and the vast majority of guys have been in an situatoin like YakobTheAwesome and bl1y described. I literally had a drunk female friend rant about it and think she was "winging" for me by physically pushing me into my target's convo with two other guys.

Seems like most wingwomen's heart is in the right place but they have to know what their role should be: how to pitch you, give social proof, occupy others etc. If she knows what she's doing, go for it. Good one's (like guys) can adapt. But keep in mind the potential backlash. I find other chicks may think you and the friend are together, which works against you.

At this point, I'd say assume she'll be as useful as your worst wingman and decide if that's more of a benefit or liability. Keep in mind, you already got the home field advantage at your friend's party so why bring sand to the beach? GL though.

You can have a table full of the most suave, attractive, masters of the game.

Add an attractive, fun woman to their group, and they become unstoppable.

I wrote about this in my article, "Becoming Attractive."

Being surrounded by cool women gives you social proof that you just can't get anywhere else. You still have to do all the approaching, but hey - now the other ladies in the bar are curious about you.

Choose your wingwoman wisely. I can't count the times I've gone out with a group of friends to a bar and a friend of ours (who's typically a pretty solid wing woman) makes some ridiculously forward comment on someone else's behalf that completely blows it.

Before putting her in an actual wing woman position, go out with her and some of the bros and see how she interacts with everyone. What's she like with the guys? How is she when another girl approaches the group? You don't really know what kind of things she's going to say and do ahead of time, so find out! In theory it seems like a good idea and makes you more approachable but you may be unpleasantly surprised.

Have the girl walk up to the girl you're into and have her say something similar to the following, "Hey, can I talk to you for a minute. I've had a crush on that guy forever and could never get him to make a move on me. He's really picky with women. I think he's kind of into you. He's a really awesome guy. What did you say to him?"

That will create enough interest to push the attraction forward.

Other things she can do are:

Occupy the other women in the group while you isolate the target.
Occupy the guys in the group while you isolate the target.
Approach with you using an indirect opener like the astrology opener.*

You have to give her something to work with and I find indirect openers to be great for wingwomen, because they get involved in the arguments.
