I once told a girl that we should get some ice cream. I live in a city where good looking women are plenty, and I'm in college, so I like to gauge whether or not we would actually get along or if I would have to put up with her.

She told me she had a boyfriend, and I told her something along the lines of 'well, I don't know how you eat ice cream, but I was thinking of something pretty PG'

She laughed and apologized and agreed to go out with me, and NOW (2 weeks later) I'm seeing action. So I guess my tip is to attract her by example, if she has a good time with you and wants to be around you, the rest falls in step

I typically don't ask. They will tell you.

If a girl says she has a boyfriend, it can sometimes be a defence mechanism. I will usually keep talking with her anyway, then later on I will ask for a number if I want it. If she repeats that she has a boyfriend, then I graciously acknowledge and wish her all the best.

If she doesn't say it a second time, it means that she was lying at first, or she is really not that attached to her boyfriend. Either way, I tend to proceed with caution.

Assume she's single, and act like she is. I was friend with my girlfriend for a few months before starting to date her. During half of that time, I had no idea she had a boyfriend because she never mentioned him; I found out by asking her randomly after I got some hints from other people. Turns out she wasn't attached to him and later dumped him to be with me. Soon 1 year together.

do it inadvertently. when she does something worth noting, imply she already has one;

this way, it doesnt seem needy, and it kills 2 birds with 1 stone: you find out if she's taken, and if she's into you

Last time this happened I just said 'that's too bad do you have a sister?' via text after I got her number. i don't know if that's seddically correct but it worked as a few weeks later we were seeing each other.
