Practice. Talk to men at first if your scared. You are probably over thinking it. Remember, life isn't movies. Openers don't matter. I bet 99.999999999999% of people alive wont have a clue what the first few sentences someone said to them were.

"This place has the best pie"

"Damn, $80 to fill up on gas? Looks like ramen for me"

"In your opinion what is the best coffee you sell here? Why?"

"I keep seeing you here, I'm Can_not_be_repaired, just so you can put a name to a face, what's yours?"

"Reading anything of interest?"

It doesn't matter, and no once cares. It's small talk to get the conversation going. You know it, they know it. Openers are stupid. "Say this and _ will happen". Bullshit. Things happen because conversation started. It's like that stupid magic feather dumbo used. If they make you feel better then use them, but in reality they don't do anything that wouldn't have happened anyway if you opened with something different.

I would say just go to the local store and talk to people. Men and women, just a sentence or two each until your comfortable. It's no different unless you make it different.

If its on campus you can always act like you're lost and just walk up to the girl you want to game and ask her about a certain location. Now, one of two things are gonna happen:

She's not gonna know where the location is and she's gonna apologize for not knowing and not being able to help you. Use this to your advantage. Say something like "oow, really?" (look away, then back to her) "well I guess pretty/cute/goodlooking girls are just as lost in their university as transfer students." This will get her attention, you're being cocky and funny, you said something that makes you somewhat desirable AND you complimented her. (Read David DeAngelo's book "Double Your Dating" to find out more about cocky funny, shit is fucking GOLD.) and from this point I guess you can just find more ways to keep talking about her and about you, maybe about the campus and her major... shit like that.
She's going to know where that location is but you have to keep asking how to get there exactly, act confused a little more, ask her if she could walk with you there or find a way to keep the conversation going (you said you're very good at that)

One thing I usually do is that I ask for the time. If they pull out a really fancy phone I usually ask them what phone is it with hopes that she will start babbling about it and maybe we'll start a conversation from there.

If she has a crappy looking phone I'll tell her how crappy/cheap/old it looks (cocky and funny, negging) but then I pull out mine which is an old flip phone which happens to be just as shitty. I'll start exaggerating on things we have in common (we have old phones, we go to the same university, we both breathe air, silly shit like that) and just keep the conversation going.

I'm 5'7" and I find myself attracted to taller or same height girls. They have large hands (larger than mine, that is) and if they're looking at me like they're interested I'll confidently walk up to them and say "wow, you have really big hands. I bet its really easy for you to grab the Pringles from the bottom of the can" They laugh. I usually keep it going until I find something to talk about.

Openings as in what? Pickup lines or just normal convo? Get some things to talk about I guess. Be topical and worldly, find out stuff in the news, things that are happening in your campus etc.

Example would be if there was a certain event going on campus you can say something like "hey did you hear they're doing x in the quad" etc. Conversation starting is ridiculously easy.

You're going to get this a lot.

It's the way you say it rather than what you say. Obviously your content has to stay contained within social boundaries (though it's okay to jump out once in awhile), but you want to convey confidence and a DGAF attitude with your speech, along with playfulness and fun. Banter like there's no tomorrow man. The way I see it, if a chick isn't into banter, then she's not worth my time trying to game anyway. Best of luck!

for me it helped to psychologically accept that openers are unnatural and thus they may feel weird at first.

but the more you talk and stay with the conversation, you soon get over that 'awkward' phase...
