If 20 guys and 20 girls were locked into a room together the girls would systematically determine which guys have the highest status, and the hottest girl will get with the highest status male, and then 2nd hottest with the second coolest and so on. This is true now, it's been true all throughout history and it would be true during tribal times.

The only thing that changed is what constitutes as higher status...

I actually really study a lot of different things and, since most of my work is marketing, it all sort of ties into PUA in one way or another. In fact, the real reason I started reading PUA stuff wasn't to sleep with women but to become more persuasive for other reasons.

One thing which I think ties into PUA quite well is Neuro Linguistic Programming because it focuses on language and interaction. The basic concept of NLP is that the majority of our brain's activity happens below the threshold of consciousness. This means that we simply aren't aware of most of the things our brain does.

A lot of what I see in pick up agrees with this without realizing it. Being charismatic, having an alpha personality, appearing confident and being able to really own social situations all appeal to women on a subconscious level. You're appealing to their instinctual desires rather than their conscious and intellectual likes. This is why you can, eventually, have women become attracted to you despite the fact that you've never had a conversation with them.

You'll also find this in marketing. The "what" and the "how" aren't really that important. People buy something because of the "why". It's why people will buy an iPhone as opposed to another smartphone of equal or better quality. "Why" is the emotional aspect of marketing. People make decisions based on emotions, even if they are a logical and analytical person by nature.

In PUA "what" is sex and attraction, "how" is the process but "why" is what you need to focus on. Why would a woman be attracted to you? Why would a woman tell her friends how great you are? It's because you appeal to her on an instinctual and emotional level, not because you "talked a good game" or you "displayed value" and certainly not because you "negged her". (I may be in the minority but I don't believe in negging.)

I studies a little of psychology, and I can tell you that the science is not as detailed as many people believe. We know enough of what works, and what doesn't, but the why is often elusive.

Generally speaking, it all stems from survival instincts, we as humans we are still hardwired the same was were wired at the dawn of Homo Sapiens, but of course today's environment is quite different.

While once cavewoman, physically weaker than caveman needed someone to protect her, especially when she was in the weaker state (to outrun predators and gather food) while pregnant; one can see how she would prefer alpha type male. The same overall innate preference remains.
