How do you know if you should pay? Start by paying attention when the bill comes up. Go into it prepared to pay, but pay attention to her reactions.

I've had girls insist on:

paying for dinner on the first date.
going dutch.
sticking me with the bill. :P

And the only way you know which approach she's taking is by noting her reaction when the check is laid on the table or when you go to pay at the register, or whatever. Basic rule of thumb is that she'll either react by doing little to nothing (She expects you to pay), by going for her purse to get her money (she at least want to go dutch), or she'll outright grab the check and say she wants to get it. She may even just vocalize which option she prefers, if is she's the No-Bullshit type.

[As far as the idea floating around that one does not have dinner for the first date...... I think that's an unnecessary and arbitrary restriction to have. If things naturally lead to dinner, just let dinner happen. Why the fuck not? In any case, dinner on the first date has never been a hindrance to me, granted, dinner is usually the first part of the plans for the evening, when this occurs.]

Pay. If you can't afford it, go somewhere you can afford.

You don't offer to buy her a drink in the first 5 minutes for totally different reasons that are not applicable hear. Pay for dinner.

Also, ditto ScienceofSilence, I generally tell people to avoid dinner dates if at all possible. You want to be doing something that allows you to be touchy when you want to be, and doesn't have a table separating you. If you have to go to dinner and sit down, sit perpendicular on the same corner if you can, so you can touch her arm when you laugh or high five about shit you connect on.

I read a study in Glamour magazine that 40% of women in the state of Georgia expect to never have to pay for anything on a date - this is the highest percent in the nation. If you're playing the odds, she doesn't expect you to pay.
