I'm not shy but I tend to stick to myself. How can I make friends?

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm naturally independent, if I want to go do something I may call someone to see if they want to come, but if they say no I'm not bummed out, I just go anyway and still have fun. I have 2 close friends and a couple people I hangout with on campus, sadly this attitude has left me with a extremely small social circle, thats absolutely devoid of women. I look forward to seeing some of the answers in this thread!

The way I fixed a similar situation was just to treat strangers like my best friend. Just talk to anyone you can about whatever is on your mind. Some people won't be receptive, but others you'll make awesome connections with. Try to think of a time where you were the most social you've ever been. Such as a party, event or something where you just talked and had fun with everyone there. Think about the vibe you had there and act like that in your interactions with people. You may have to think about it a lot at first, but soon it'll become natural.

Also, know that it takes EFFORT to meet and get to know people. It hardly ever just happens, like it did when you were younger. Since you naturally tend to stick to yourself, it'll be going outside of your comfort zone a little bit, but you have to stick it out, and the end result is worth it.

Ive met some of my best friends from cold approaching. Ive done so by being completely natural when im gaming. I dont use lines or routines. I just go in and meet people, I have no agenda and people see me as a 'cool' guy. I talk about things that I find amusing, and usually people love the energy. Its all about positive vibing. Keep at the cold approaches and you will definitely make cool friends :)

Does anyone here cold approach other dudes? I have nothing against making friends with women. In fact I usually have more girl friends/acquaintances than guys (from cold approaching). But its a different energy hanging out with guys and I think its an important part that I am missing. I know it sounds lame but now that I don't smoke pot I wouldn't even know what to do if I hung out with a guy.

Read How to Win Friends and Influence People.

Here's the first four chapters in four points:

Don't criticize, condemn, or complain.
Give honest and sincere appreciation (for people's good qualities and actions).
Arouse in the other person an eager want. (see things from their perspective and persuade them why it's to their advantage to do something)
Become genuinely interested in other people (and express/demonstrate this interest in your interactions with them)

But srsly just read the book it will help you very much.

Edit: If you're worried more about how to meet people in the first place, pick up a new sport/hobby/activity or revive an old one. Or join a community group of some sort. Volunteer for something. Just go out and do more things in your life and this will naturally bring you in more contact with people who could become part of your social circle.
