you can't attack the boyfriend directly; what you need to do is actually whenever he comes up describe him as the ideal boyfriend. exaggerate franticly about how perfect he is. this will make her bring up the fact that he's not. Sounds like you have a good friend there. The conventional logic is to avoid situations like this altogether. But personally, I think it's fine to lay the groundwork for something by being attractive and setting yourself up for down the road. I highly doubt she's going to stay with her boyfriend forever.

My biggest hangup with this is that you told her the date was "as friends" then are gonna try and pick her up. At the very least she's gonna be confused, probably pretty uncomfortable. Did "be clear about your intentions" go out the window?

You can go out as friends and work on your social skills. It's one thing if she initiates it, but do not make a sexual move on her. If it was your girl, you wouldn't want another guy to do this to her, it's incredibly disrespectful.
