A friend of mine once told me that his colleague was talking about some expensive piece of jewelry she wanted to buy. He asked her why she would pay so much for a "non-functional" item (i.e., something that is purely ornamental). Her response was that it was functional; it made her happy.

Women like to be led and fit in with the status quo.

Corporations take advantage of this with their advertising. How often have you seen consumer goods marketed towards women based on pure merit alone? It's always people parading around with said merchandise having fun, or your empowered stay at home mom and beta hubby couple endorsing the product so that the consumers can live the same lifestyle.

If you look at the ads from the 1980's and prior, you'll find them endoring the features of the product rather than the lifestyle it's promising (ie: fitting in with the status quo).

With men, we tend to place more emphasis on functionality. (Unless you subscribe to malefashionadvice) We need tools to forge ahead rather than fit in. Which is why images of people jumping around and having fun in sweaters don't really appeal to us.

I'm sure we'd all like to buy whatever we want on a whim but men are long-term thinkers (generally speaking) so this would be bad business.

There are times when investments need to be made (buying expensive suits, a new laptop for your career and etc).

Women buy because of the FEELZ.

I was taking one of my customers out to lunch near a pretty decent sized mall during the week and I was blown away by how many hot housewives did nothing but shop at the mall midday on a fucking Tuesday. It literally blew my mind that this was the purpose in their life.

We all had a laugh as to how they're out there spending their man's money.

Men are travelers and hunters. They look for prey at distance and bring it back.

Women are gatherers. They look for large mounts of useful items and bring them back from shorter distances. They stockpile things.

As women would look at the ground more, they would pick up things that fascinated them. In time men realized bringing back these valued items could impress them and increase chance of mating.

In modern times, this procurement of items valued by women has become one almost exclusively by currency. You could for and dig up some gold and melt and hammer it into some attractive form. Men sometimes still do this in the DIY subreddit.

Hmm, I'm not really sure about this. I say this because clothing shops are usually a lot less popular when it comes to men. On the other hand, electronic stores etc are a lot more popular for men and less for women. I don't think your store alone is enough to make that judgement, but that's just my opinion.

Everyone is materialistic.

Not everyone values the intangible qualities like truth, honor, justice, discipline, compassion and such.

Women appear far more materialistic because they value nothing else. Men value materialism just as much, even more so, because they also value the intangible qualities because of how they relate to material possessions.

Men understand that there is no point to having things if you can't protect them. What is the point of producing crops of someone can take them away from you after you've produced them? Justice ensures there are consequences for such actions.

Many of the intangible qualities I mentioned are important because of their relation to ensuring that people have the right to think, to work and to keep the results. Ideally, men understand why justice is important, why discipline is a virtue, etc. Women only care about the results, not the thinking or the working.

Because men look for women who exhibit "status". That means expensive clothing, it means diverse clothing, it means jewelery. Men splurge elsewhere, just look at the kinds of cars men buy. And women, in turn, are more attracted to men who drive Ferraris and Porsches than men who drive low end cars.

We're all materialistic and we enjoy it.
