The body language you're describing isn't actually one of arousal or interest, but rather of self-comfort and self protection. Generally if someone is closing themselves off (like crossing their arms) it indicates discomfort. Another common comforting behavior for women is to touch right at the notch at the bottom of their throat, which is often disguised as playing with a necklace.

/u/Schly had an interesting experience with this behavior, and good on him for noticing. I'd guess that a lot of people aren't comfortable having their boss directly around them, and this could be even more true if they are in a lower menial position.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'd like to hear one. In my office, there were a few girls that would do menial tasks for you. My boss used to complain that every time he spoke to any of them, they'd put a hand over their cleavage as if to block him from looking, even though he wasn't.

In contrast, those same girls would be in my office, sitting on the floor, sorting and filing documents for me while bending forward and showing off damn near everything, for hours at a time without a care in the world.

We're (boss and I) reasonably close in age, and the girls were much younger. I don't know why they felt threatened or creeped out or whatever by him, but not me. I'm certainly no angel, or stranger to the double entendre.

Yes I have the same experience. Most of the times when I'm walking in a crowd, say a mall, and pass by women they tend to fix their jacket or cardigan as we walk past each other, with and without eye contact. After we pass one another they go back to their normal way of walking after fixing/covering themselves.

It can be many things. One more thing to consider:

Women that are somewhat attracted to you but unavailable (eg LTR) will actually have more negative body language toward you than a neutral or available one. Probably a defense mechanism for their current relationship (got this from some psych paper, don't have the references right now).

I have noticed this as well. I am not always the best at eye contact and my hearing sucks so sometimes my eyes drift down. I have actually caught myself looking at cleavage even though I was not focusing on that, if that makes any sense.

I suspect sometimes it's girls being aware of their sexuality and being modest, even subconsciously. I don't take it as a sign one way or the other.

Would love to hear a female perspective on this.

It's a sign of discomfort. Any action that involves covering the chest represents a desire to "protect yourself".

But of course, you have to put this into context.

What happens if you actually approach them? Do they open up? Or do other negative body language cues show up?
