It's a mood killer generally. Why would you ask this? If she doesn't have a boyfriend, she'll be wondering why you are asking. You are making her think rationally about whether she wants to become emotionally engaged with you. That never goes well.

If they have one and are happy with them, they will causally drop them into the conversation. No need to ask.

Tell a sexual joke, to set the mood, and then she will tell you if she has a BF.

And You can tell a sexual joke withing 1 minute of meeting her.

It is fine to straight up ask. But, I think there's a huge lack of sexual tension in your interactions, hitting it off isn't there just because you laugh or talk a long time, your hitting it off if the interaction turns you two on.

No, it's generally a bad idea because you should be anytime attractive no matter what : thus, you don't care if she has or not a bf, because you are yourself, cool and attractive. If you ask for her boyfriend, it indicates that you are not entirely confident on yourself (I don't say that it's not a reasonable question from a rational point of view, but it's just unnatractive in terms of seduction).

You talked about loosing time. Oh, yes, sure, it's very annoying to loose 30 min but, hey, picking up girls from a man point of view is a lot of time lost (dating, failing, phoning etc.) ; you have to deal with it.
