Need help with confidence with strangers.

Because you care what people think, what you have to ask yourself is, are you at your best?
If you are not, and probably no one really is, are you doing what it takes to go towards the best version of yourself? Yes? Then you should use this as a weapon, use that confidence and don't seek validation nor jugement from strangers.

keep going up to strangers and talking to them, the only way you are going to overcome your anxiety is to do it so much that it becomes just another thing that you do. There really is no shortcut. Sounds to me like you just get way too nervous when walking up to strangers, think to yourself when you walk up to a group that they have 5 minutes (or less) to impress you, not the other way around.

It probably is some sort of psychological anchoring. We all have multiplicity in our personalities. I'm quiet around strangers at times; and high energy other times. Just focus on areas you want to work on and slowly take it from there. Maybe start with increasing eye contact, then speaking up, then standing straight. Don't put too much pressure or it'll come off weird.

Public speaking class in college helped me. Also just starting friendly conversations with anyone about anything during my day. Sometimes its a few sentences sometimes it turns into a longer multi-topic conversation. Im guessing you have this problem with women also. Next time at a bar find a girl with some tattoos showing & ask her what ever come to mind about her tats. Try to keep the conversation going with fallow up questions & your own thoughts/stories/ideas. Tell her you read girls with more than 5 tattoos are 8 times more likely to be bi-sexual.

I also had to overcome my fear of strangers and even now I still feel myself fall into it if things aren't going my way. Go somewhere with the intent on doing something to random people, start with something simple. Go to a public place, with the intent of finding out X peoples name before you leave. Something as simple as introducing yourself can be helpful. Once you are comfortable with that, step it up a bit and see if you can find out more information about people. Once you are comfortable with that try to see if you can start a convo with someone random and keep it going for longer then X minutes. After a while you will become a natural at all these things.

My favorite so far is hugs...try to get a hug from 10 people in a place, it REALLY puts you out of your comfort zone.

One question... How do you have friends if you can't talk to strangers? Weren't all friends completely strangers at one point? Realize all people want the same things you do, and go up to them and have fun.
