How in the hell do you make your eyes wider?!? This is something I actually know about, I spent many months studying the structure of the eyes and facial muscles in art school, and it is one of my long term interests (very useful for CG modeling). You can raise your eyebrows up and down with the Frontalis muscle, you can contract your eyes with the Orbicularis oculi muscle by pulling the muscle up over your cheekbones. But there is no way to widen your eyes or eye musculature horizontally. Put a finger on your face near the outer corner of your eye. Now try to move your muscles to make that finger go out. You can't do it. You can bring it inward, but not outward. The only way you can widen your eyes is if you start from a squint and relax. Now do that by placing your finger near the corner of your eye next to your nose. You can't widen your eyes with that either.

Perhaps you mean opening your eyes more vertically? That exposes more of the whites of your eye. That looks unnatural. When you are relaxed and alert, the lower part of your iris is slightly covered by your lower eyelid. If you open your eyes more, you can see the whites under the iris. The best way to make a portrait look creepy and awful is to show some whites under their iris above their eyelid.

In fact, you look better when you do just the opposite. Here is a totally great video by master photographer Peter Hurley. He says opening your eyes is a "deer in the headlights" look. He says you look better when you contract your orbicularis oculi, he calls it "squinching."

BTW I found this video from someone posting it in seddit, trying to show everyone how to take better pics for your online profile. It got a lot of downvotes. They were idiots. This video is fucking awesome and I am very grateful to the long-forgotten sedditor who showed it to us.
