Tips for first impressions?

1) Appearance - Dress well, appropriate for the occasion - Appear neat and presentable (haircut, fingernails) - Maintain good posture

2) Meeting People - Eye contact - Smile - Remember names - Ask questions - Apply a "yes and..." attitude - Escalate conversations - Introduce humor

3) Socializing - Everyone you interact with is experiencing the same thing-- college-- for the first time. It's awkward for everyone. Don't be afraid to break the ice. Put yourself out there first. People will be glad you did. - "Work the room." Don't get locked into spending the entire evening with the same group. Stay long enough with a pocket of people to make an impression, learn enough to reconnect later (names and maybe a relatable that you can use to reinitiate conversation at a later date), and a means to get in touch again, then move on to the next group and repeat. - Connect people. Don't just look for the ways that you relate to others, find those links amongst disparate parties. "Oh, you placed out of freshman English? So did this guy in my hall, you're probably the only two first year students in that 201 class-- let me introduce you." That's how you build a network, and how your increase the value of knowing you exponentially.

Basically, do everything I didn't do when I was starting college.

Work on your core self (self-esteem, confidence). Dress and groom well, work out, smile and say hi. Going from 'pretty socially awkward' to 'capture the room' and 'friends straight away' are huge huge steps. They require a fundamental change in yourself and lots of practice.

Yeah so College ISN'T like the MOVIES. You don't capture rooms. You shift to your class, sit down somewhere and take notes or listen to lecturer. There's no socializing in class or out of class but very rarely. More socializing happens in social classes (which you likely won't take first year), the dorms/residences and cafeteria. You're not going to capture the cafeteria unless you're a super model or have a bad ass entourage--which I'm guessing neither apply.

As to first impression--that's only something that happens when you approach a woman. In that respect, go to cafeteria and approach a woman whose either sitting alone or if you are ballsy, sitting in a group of other women. Your first impression will be your smile, your confidence, your touching her, and your words.

But yeah get it out of your head that college is the time to transform. Transform now. College isn't like the movies so don't treat it like it is.
