Well, girls aren't dumb. Even when you use indirect approach, they still subconsciously know you're trying to pick them up. It's not the type of approach that's getting you into the friend zone, but what you do after the approach. Thing is, whether the approach is direct or indirect depends on the initial stages of the approach ONLY. So for example if you ask her for directions, it's indirect, but only for like a minute, then YOU SHOULD START FLIRTING with her. The only difference between indirect and direct openers is when you convey your interest in the girl.

Direct is obviously right away, "Hey you look cute, I wanted to come say hi". Here she knows your intent.

Indirect, "Hey this dj is killing it tonight". You could just be a friendly guy wanting to chat. But within 5 minutes of the interaction she should know you are sexually interested in her.

If the girl is within social circle, get her alone. If the girl is a cold approach, you should already be alone (for the most part)

Then, be direct and honest (and sexy) I'm oversimplifying this, but basically you should be whispering in her ear smoothly what you want to do to her, not shouting it across the room. If she doesn't like you she will reject you, otherwise you'll hook up.

If she doesn't like you, it won't ruin your reputation. The worst you'll get is "he's a sleaze" or "he's a creep", and that's only if the girl is a bitch in the first place for spreading gossip about you for being honest. And so what if she does tell people shit about you? Just own it. Don't try and run from labels or bad reputations, if your friends don't like you for being honest about your intentions and being sexual with girls, they aren't your friends anyway.
