Ugh, I hate this. I have this situation at college.

Like Zoidberg said, I keep her on the back burner and continue to show social proof. Would never try to fuck the guy over though.

Social proof and put them on the back burner. More approach based but when she says I'm seeing someone, still said for Facebook as you never know.

Getting them to come to your gatherings might be tricky as A) they have a life, B) they have to put the work in to their own relationship.

But if that DOES work, you will certainly know where you stand a lot.

I'd have thought that digital communication would have been your best bet here because you can see what their status is before you hear about it from someone else (i.e. you see she's put "single" on fb, whereas you'd hear she's single time after if you heard it from a friend).

So without sounding like a Hyena, I would keep digital communication as the main priority and make a move when the relationship changes/seems to be heading south.

Instead, let's share and discuss what tactics you take with the women in your life who show clear signs of interest, but are taken. Beyond the whole moral debate here, consider this from a practical point of view.

This is a girl who comes with complications and drama.

That BF? Probably not going to be your biggest fan. If he finds out, could be varying degrees of mess. Especially if he has friends or connections that could complicate your life.
Is she unhappily in the relationship, but still in it? If she's showing interest to you or others, then likely so. The problem is, this means that she's likely developed some degree of deceptiveness towards her BF. Being involved with someone like that tends to be messy. Often some degree of manipulativeness, ends up being brought to bear against you.

Personally, I find the whole challenge of this sort of situation, to be tired and played out and not worth spending my time on. But YMMV.

Do you invite them to social gathering bi-weekly to see if they'll bite? Do you maintain recurring digital communication? Or do you dissapear only to resurface when that relationship status changes?

Combination of all these things. Occasional invites perhaps. Though when these situations have happened to me, those women in question tend to be the kind who go out of their way to make something happen. It might be that all you need to do is provide an opportunity or even just hint at one.
