"Be yourself" means "Stop trying to be what you think other people want, instead be the best version of yourself and give that to everyone around you"

Too many guys in the game try to say and become whoever or whatever they think the person they are talking to wants.

"Be yourself" doesn't mean "Don't try, don't improve, don't get involved"

I just got back from a meeting with a "success coach."

The guy has lived along the frontier, had successful businesses, traveled abroad, was doing "game" in the 80s, and is an amazing speaker.

Towards the end of the meeting, after we had talked about dozens of topics centering around creating high performance habits and group culture, I realized nothing remotely close to this old canard came up. He never once said, "but you just have to be yourself."

Instead, it was all about figuring out how to deliver the maximum amount of value to other people.

Likewise, in many traditional cultures, the notion of an innate self doesn't exist. In Buddhism, for example, it's taught that the 'self' is an illusion, and what we think of as the self is simply that which experiences.

Thinking back, you were probably feel like an incredibly different person than you were 10 years ago. You could reason that "you" will continue to change and develop as you accumulate experience and put in effort.

Just be yourself is good advice if you really understand it. Just using it as an excuse to be lazy, insecure and staying inside your comfort zone obviously won't work.

But if you know thyself, know what you like and don't, what your strengths and weaknesses are, have confidence, are a person of action and take responsibility for your actions etc - then you should just be yourself. Basically rule 1 of being yourself is 'be great' and rule 2 is 'don't be not great'.

This is kind of like women saying they like nice guys. Yeah they do, but they should be men too, reasonably well kept, have social status etc.

I always translate "be yourself" to "be completely comfortable with yourself". Most of us aren't and that's where the problems come from. If you embrace your masculinity and personality all the way then you're truly being yourself.
