I think that you should pay for the first date, If she doesn't offers to pay (her food) the next date you have together, then she is just using you.

She’s not indebted to anything. A man pays because he feels it’s a gentlemanly gesture in appreciation for her time. Heck, I still pay when I know this is the 1st and last date. Many girls will offer to pay for snacks and so on.

If you suggested the movie then you should pay but, if she did it depends on if you know she is willing to split the cost. If you are really into her then suck it up and pay if not then you can suggest bill split without worrying that you might ruin any potential for future dates.

I think it would it would be a form of obligation imposed on her if your were trying to buy her love. If you simply want to enjoy her company and the activity requires money than I think you should cover the cost. Now if you were paying her rent, buying her expensive items, and other material goods I think that would be a form of trying to guilt her into thinking she owes you.

It's fine to pay, but the key thing to note is that you shouldn't expect anything out of it (that's the "unspoken contract" that Glover is referring to).

Instead, pay for her movie because you want to be a nice person. But again, don't expect anything out of it. Just because you paid for her movie doesn't mean she's going to be your girlfriend, or sleep with you, or whatever.

Eh, I always offer to pay on a first date (I don’t even ask, I just assume I am) but if she says “don’t worry we can split it” or “I’ll pay for my own” then go with whatever she suggests, if you insist on paying, that’s what makes it weird. Pretty simple.
