I'm in a creative line of work where constructive feedback is extremely helpful, and every time I receive it from talented people that I trust, it makes my end product all the better. I absolutely love my job and am very good at it.
However...
Growing up, I was the “smart kid.” I was always told by my mom and by teachers how smart I was, and my identity became tied to being the smart kid. I later crashed and burned in college when the pressure got too much and a strong, resilient work ethic and stoic mindset would have been way more helpful than a label of being a smart kid. When things got tough, my smart guy identity was shattered and I fell to pieces.
Fortunately, I've been able to cultivate a stoic mindset since then. I now realize that my ability is secondary to the effort that I put into a task. The more effort I put into something, whether it's learning a new skill or making a new product, the better the outcome, regardless of what my starting ability is. I am now 100% okay with sucking at something when I first try it. Stoicism and resilience win the day. I've managed to pick up numerous new skills and branch into new and exciting lines of work because of this.
My big problem lies in constructive feedback. I dread it. There's still a part of me that's tied my self worth to being the perfect, without-a-flaw smart guy, so whenever anyone gives me criticism, it's like an attack on my worth as a human being. Feedback, no matter how helpful it is, how necessary it is, and how much better it will make me and my product, tears me apart inside.
Logically, I can see what's happening, but emotionally, it's like I'm a kid again. I get a strong fight or flight response to a feedback email that makes reading it excruciating. I can only make it a paragraph at a time before having to retreat for a while. Meditating helps a little, but I was hoping for something more.
And most of the criticism I get isn't even that bad! Mostly minor notes and tweaks for improvement, nothing along the lines of “You're bad at this and you should feel bad for making this,” but some part of me is translating these minor notes to just that.
My question is: Is there anything I can do to make myself more objective and detached to criticism? Or even better, enthusiastic to receiving criticism that can help me? Anything to emotionally untie it from my self worth would be great.
