As early on in the interaction as possible you want to emotionally engage the girl. This stops girls from being aloof or dismissive of you right off the bat. Adding tension helps, which is why there is a greater focus of providing a challenge early on (pulling away) vs doing something that's like a compliment (a push).

A neg was a type of challenge to a girl, but since the time mystery came out with it, there have been a lot of other ways of providing challenges. Basically anything that counts as breaking rapport fits the bill here, you can:

Tease - You have such a mischievous smile (right off the bat after opener if she smiles)

Cold read + push - You seem like a cat person. I hate cats.

Disqualify - I don't think you can handle me, I'm too high maintenance for you (disqualify her, not yourself)

Cocky funny - I can tell you appreciate perfection.

Just some examples.

Doing an opener then doing a pull is still a valid way of opening girls. Although the preference these days is doing something safer such as a push pull vs just a pull.

It works for people who like a challenge, they will see the “I can’t date you?” As “I’m going to date you, just you watch” But really it’s a very childish notion that only works on people who are easily goaded. To everyone else it just comes off as rude UNLESS you know how to pull it off with charm and not just blatant douchery

Dude those negs are so old that hair one is ANCIENT. Fake nails, something on ur face or shirt, all bullshit unless you’re a really fuckin good actor. You’d be better off with one like “wow you’re awesome you’re so small you’re fun sized” or something along those lines for a small girl. Maybe don’t do on big or tall girls that will just fuckin drill their confidence into the ground. A small neg like above, delivered with sincerity will do good in theory, if she’s hot you’d need more for this kind of game.

The foundation of PUA Theory is sort of suboptimal/dated at this point.

PUA gives these procedures that, broken down, are rather formulaic.

Formulas are math, which is black and white, facts and numbers and true and false -- and women are the antithesis of all of that.

As an example, 'Negging' is this technical term that PUA came up with which, when applied so that it actually works, leads one or more of the following outcomes:

target is unsure about your feelings for her

target becomes insecure and seeks approval

target thinks you are confident

etc.

But can you see any problems with applying a formulaic strategy to a very NON formulaic creature like a woman?

If women developed a system, I'm sure it could be mechanical as hell - because we, as men, are mechanical. Look at the system we developed!

Back to the point, you can accomplish all of the same things, in less time, with a much higher success rate, and I basically guarantee you, with higher quality women.

So anyway, what you need to do is focus on the only way to truly master this stuff, so that you don't need to memorize rules so much as simply learn how to pick up on a language that you don't yet understand --

You need to learn how to understand women.

Easier said than done, and takes practice, but it's do-able and worth it.

I usually approach girls through online dating apps, and I have found that if you don't neg them strongly, they won't give you the time of day. However, I usually try to gear the negs toward something that is neutral and not personal. The hair comment sounds very likely to offend, but I don't know, maybe it works on 10/10 girls who are incredibly confident. I'd be more likely to imply that she's impolite, mean or has offended you somehow. The focus is then not completely on something about her that can't be changed, but the relationship between the two of you. I'd be really interested to see if that hair comment works in the field. Maybe not as an opener, but further into the conversation?
