Time to man up, tell them the truth, and follow your dream.

FYI you better show a little more discipline and backbone in the military than you did in college and dealing with your parents.

Holy shit I hope you read this and really (REALLY) consider my thoughts. My brother was in a similar situation. My brother is a genius, he went to college got a degree but instead of going to join the workforce joined the military in an attempt to join the Navy SEALS. I actually now have 3 friends who have done this. They all joined as enlisted as they wanted to have multiple attempts at joining the SEALS in case they failed the first time (officers can only try once). So essentially the difference between them and you is that they had a degree but still joined the Navy in the exact same situation you will.

Now you probably think you are special and a particularly great physical specimen. You very may well be but so was my brother. One of my friends who joined was an all american athelete (swimming). My brother could out run pretty much anyone (I think he was 3rd) in his SEALs class. These guys took joining the SEALs VERY seriously. They understood it would be tough, tried their best to prepare. All in all, believe me when I tell you that they weren't bitches. They weren't immature. They wanted to be heros and they wanted to be SEALs.

So what happened? Great athletes, took it serious, smart and dedicated. What happened to these specacular people? 0 for 3 of them made it through the first 2 days of BUDs. In other words, they took this serious as fuck (this is something you have to believe, I can't stress enough that you very likely won't take it any more seriously than they did) and they didn't even make it 2 days past the start of ACTUAL training let alone make it to something like the infamous Hell Week. In my brothers class out of something like 100 or 150, I think 8 enlisted men made it through BUDs. To quote my brother "They needed under 10 people and they were going to make sure no more than 10 made it through."

You've seen the videos you think you know everything there is to know about joining. My brother says its not even close. You're holding a 80 pound log over your head and a instructor just comes up and kicks you in the balls? You don't see that on TV. You're running 6 miles and have to take a shit? Do it in your pants on the run. You don't see that on TV. You're doing push ups in other peoples piss, shit and vomit? You don't see that on TV.

So what happens after these super great soldiers (shy of SEALs but good enough to be special forces in any other branch -- again, I know, it happened with my brother) when they drop or get kicked out of SEALs? They are literally the lowest of the low in the Navy. They chip paint off ships. Get stationed on subs. Are literally dirt. On top of this they are stuck in the Navy for 6 years because a SEALs contract is 6 years not 4. Today, one is literally chipping paint. One is doing nothing and trying to get an MBA while he cleans offices. One made it through Marines Spec Forces training but his funding got fucked up and now is in limbo. He could literally be cleaning peoples shit in a hospital in Okinawa next month.

Long story short, if you decide you want to do SEALs you better have a backup plan and a very, very smart one. Remember if (really, when) you get dropped from SEALs you will have 0 say in your life for 6 years. That is an EXCEPTIONALLY difficult situation to execute any type of plan in and you need to realize that in almost ALL LIKELY HOOD that will be you.

PM me if you want to talk more. I can even try to work it out so you can talk to my brother. I want you to make the right decision for you, but unlike my brother I hope you listen to these warning and make an informed and rational decision. In my opinion your recruiter wants to push for a SEALS contract because you will be in for 6 years, not 4. He knows you have a very, very low chance of actually making a team.

My best friends dad is a Colonel in the army. His one bit of advice to ANYONE considering joining the military is to never, ever trust a recruiter.

Or join the military for a few years and then go back to college with your tuition paid for.

For one thing, DON'T TRUST THE FUCKING RECRUITERS. They are snakes, pure and simple. If they tell you something, get it in writing.

As for mom and dad, if you are sure, tell them you feel you need to achieve on your own path, and that you will continue college while in the armed forces. Yeah, it's hard but they will give you tuition assistance while active, and it's a lot easier to do than dealing with the GI bill.

Time to grow up and start making decisions for yourself. Personally I think the Navy Seals are badass. If you can't tell your parents to shove it you're probably not Seal material. You think any of those guys gave a fuck about what their parents or friends thought before deciding to be a martial badass?
