I'm guessing most of us have dealt with this. Last night I was at a bbq, and there was only one girl I didn't know. Walked over and started chatting her up. It was painfully obvious what I was doing, but I made the token gesture of chatting with her friend first, before turning to face her and cutting us off from the circle. Left to mingle and not overstay my welcome, then came back 10 minutes later to continue. My game isn't good yet, but I got the looks, job and hobbies down enough that I'm not starving for women.

Well, 10 minutes into the 2nd conversation, probably 25 minutes overall, she says "no I haven't read that, but my bf...white noise"

Totally tuned her out, was polite, and I think I opened one more 30 second convo thread so it wasn't a socially awkward exit, and then I excused myself and walked away.

Now, what I did was rude. This is simply true. But it wasn't necessarily wrong. It was obvious exactly what happened, and I'm sure others picked up on it. However, as someone who supposedly values his time, isn't that how I should act?

I was never grumpy or bitter, I simply was obviously talking to a pretty girl I found interesting, and when I found out she was in a relationship, there really wasn't much more I had to say.

I know IDGAF is a healthy attitude but for the sake of social tact, I'd rather spend an additional 5 minutes if there is a smoother exit strategy.
