How do you best deal with those types of dudes who act like "natural cult leaders". I've noticed that there's a few of those in every few groups that I've encountered and I try to stay away but they wrap their hands around everyone.

Also, if everyone likes someone, and there's a bunch of people following them, it's probably because they are giving to the group what the group wants.

Being confrontational is what works. You have to be indispensible in such group so you need to learn to create value for such group. Once you do you gain respect. That will boost your confidence. Once you have that you can confront the guy and not give into him. His words can't hurt you and you have to be willing to be confrontational, argumentative and be able to stand your ground. The best way to do this is if you become indespensible TO HIM. That way he will have to suck up to you and will be torn on losing something by confronting you. Standing your ground will therefore become easier. Of course you can't just do this out of jealousy and bitterness. Recognize his strengths and learn from him and have respect for what he does right (in your own accord). Don't just try to shut down someone because they make you uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable is absolutely the name of the game here.

Edit: also call him out on his shit if he starts making you look butthurt. Your confrontation has to be calibrated to his response.
