Even a direct approach depends on the situation.

Here's something to consider:

If you spot a girl from a distance on the street walking away from your direction would you want to to catch up with her and meet her or would you not want to bother because you don't think she's worth the effort to chase down?

If you go for the former then you should be direct.

But if you think a girl you don't even know isn't worth that effort then there is no need to be direct.

If you prefer to just approach girls who are along your way, you can simply start conversations more socially or indirect.

Theres no wrong or right answer to that question by the way.

Especially when you get more experienced you can sort of sense whether a girl would be receptive to you or not so if you sense that from a girl who is meters away and getting farther then in that particular scenario it might be worth it to catch up with her.

Other than that the only reasons to be direct is if you see clues that she might already be attracted to you or if you don't feel like talking much and accept that you'd be playing more of a numbers game.

Indirect though, actually builds more attraction in the long term.

Direct only has the potential to create a spike in attraction in the beginning but if being direct is your only move then returns will quickly diminish.

Its sort of like the effect of seeing a funny video, the more often you see it, the less funny it becomes.

Furthermore, being direct only has that effect when a girl is at least somewhat attracted to you.

If a girl is completely indifferent or even repelled then being direct will have no effect on her other than some slight flattery.

Whereas starting conversations indirectly doesn't require initial attraction for women to be willing to talk to you and actually builds attraction in progressively increasing amounts over time.

And despite what some will say, attraction can be built.

Its easy to illustrate. Lets say Christian Grey was real but the only difference is that he looks like an average guy, he's not extremely handsome but he's still a billionaire and still successful and dominant.

Assuming she doesn't recognize him, if a girl meets Christian and they just making small talk, not really having a sexual or romantic conversation, she may not be that impressed with him at first but as she starts to see his personality and finds out that he is actually a fucking billionaire, do you think she still won't be that impressed?

But the slow reveal of your greatness isn't even the best way you can build attraction when you're indirect.

Its when you're absolutely congruent with your indirect approach that you build the most attraction.

What does it mean to be congruent with an indirect approach?

If you're genuinely unsure whether you like a girl or not and you're genuinely unsure whether she's worth your time but you're at least giving her a chance to show you what she's like by making small talk with her then that will naturally put pressure on her to win you over.

And the harder she works to win you over, the more attracted she will get to you.

I actually don't like calling this approach an "indirect approach", I'd rather call it a social approach because if you're congruent, you're still doing an authentic approach, you're just authentically skeptical about the girl you're approaching.

The general rule is the more effort you are visibly displaying to meet her, the more direct you should go. Personally I like going direct bc I’m intermediate at daygame. With direct, at least you’ll learn. Indirect as someone who’s not advanced is just a recipe to not hook many girls and stunt your growth. Eventually though as you progress it’s more ok to add in indirect.

The more direct you are the faster you can hook up. Women know what you want, and appreciate boldness. Beat around the bush and they'll lump you in with the other weak ass Betas.

This is a congruence question.
Indirect is valid if you are genuinely interested in what you're discussing. Don't begin a conversation about her shoes unless you're authentically wanting to have a convo about that. Otherwise, it peters out, feels forced, and gets weird - she *will* pick up on that.

It's worth experimenting with direct just to see how women react to you. My results are better there than the alternative - it's just more who I am.
