This is a great post I mean I cannot go on about this. I'm 51 years old, and I have pretty bad social anxiety from depression that I've had for probably 40 years. I've done a really good job of hiding it especially from myself by dating women who were total messes that I could help, helping friends, bouncing around from social group to social group so I could never be real close friends with anybody but have a whole lot of acquaintances. The social butterfly who has depression. That was me and it took a little while for me to realize it. It was the pandemic. My wife and I have a great marriage, but with the pandemic we had to close ranks with our friends and be very cautious. we called it our little bubble and we would have get togethers that would just be the same 10 of us all the time. This was so against what I have always done because I've always organized big parties where we have a lot of new people etc and this allowed me to hide, especially from myself, how much depression I have. Now take that with the fact that my wife is probably in the best place she has ever been. Now most guys probably would have dumped her early on because of some of the antics, but I embraced it because it allowed me to totally ignore my own shit. But when we started having small intimate gatherings with the same people throughout the year, then I started exhibiting bad behavior around them and to my wife. This was only in social situations when I felt anxious. Side note: my wife and I react the same when we get anxious or nervous or any of those things and we tend to snap at each other or expect the other person to comfort us. Well as you would guess, when I got nervous and social anxious, then I would make a scene or something else. Also, I don't drink that much but I found myself drinking more and more. This all came to a climax whenever I got really belligerently drunk and went off on all of them. now we're all a bunch of prima donnas and so that really hurt their feelings and they Don't really get it. Furthermore, the only time we would see our friends would be at get together so for the last year they all they solved me was this reclusive and now asshole so they are quickly took my wife's side and she got to play the victim of all this which is a whole another story.

This post is what I have been trying to do over the last few months. Make myself a better person for me which will in turn make me a better person for my wife my family and my friends. I love the questions about what a hero would do. I have not thought about that in that way, but now I will. Thank you so much for this post

I like the idea, but definitely be careful with this philosophy. As it usually leads some down the path of, "if I'm failing, it's entirely my fault", which just isn't true and is an incredibly blind and unhealthy way to think about things. Becoming the hero of your own life will not automatically make things better. It WILL however, provide you with more opportunities to make things better. It'll especially aid in developing more self-confidence. So basically, strive to be better than you were the day before. But don't beat yourself up over unrealistic expectations and don't blame yourself for every mistake. Find ways to grow as a person every day, but don't pretend that things are only shitty because of your perspective. Sometimes things are just really shitty, and it's okay to feel sad, angry, frustrated or hopeless. But you have to remember to not base your future decisions on those feelings.
