I (30M) finally cracked with my (34F) wife. We have a 7 month old and a 5 year old who is my step son.
We didn’t live together prior to marriage because of the situation and boundaries with her step son we both agreed on. Once we decided to get married, we made moves on a living situation. Essentially - she used her parents and step son as reasons to move into her childhood home. Her mother sold her house after living solo for 20 years, and purchased the house from her father at the max of everyone’s budget, saying it was gonna be the best solution. The “plan” was to build an addition and/or some other construction and my questions were “where is the money coming from?” And “when is this happening”
Nobody really took into consideration my concerns of the home being at max budget, all with her mother’s money and credit. I asked to be involved, come to find out my [soon to be] wife didn’t have a credit score eligible for a mortgage and told her mom to keep us off of it just in case “things didn’t work out so he doesn’t take anything”
Moving in (2022) was a disaster, and suddenly my life became controlled by her. Going to the gym was a problem, working late was a problem, wanting to enjoy some pick up soccer with friends was a problem. The solution was “you need to be home and need to want to be home.” Add in living in close quarters with your MIL, and she’s lovely - but this house is tight. Everyone is on top of each other. Suffocating.
Fast forward to now, and we both resent each other. She doesn’t like my family and a few of my friends and my family isn’t too fond of her either. All I get thrown in my face is how she gave me a baby and pays for everything (on credit cards) and there’s no slowing down or accountability on finances. A lot of the stuff I can say we likely don’t need either, they’re just nice to have. We just got a family car, and again her credit was so low she couldn’t qualify so I decided to help thinking it was a stepping stone towards unity. Wrong. I didn’t even get a thank you, instead got told not to move the mirrors on her car when I drive. I ask about finances and suddenly she’s too tired and busy to discuss it in the moment.
When I speak up I get rebuttals and excuses galore, and I’ve been hanging on really for my son and step son, who I love a hell of a lot. I have my issues too and I’m not 100% a saint either. I come with my own set of issues because who doesn’t, but after last nights fight where there was just no accountability and just low blows and finger pointing, i gave up. I can no longer sustain it I don’t think - the idea that if this is gonna work it has to come from me and I have to change. I took on her world in good faith and it’s never enough.
