No, you need to change topics and stop acting like her shoulder to cry on or her therapist. That’s msiter nice guy behavior and leads to the friendzone. Getting closer to a girl = being friendzoned. It doesn’t get you to a romantic relationship.

and say stuff like Oh he’s such a jerk

No, because when a girl complains about a guy they date, there is a dissonance between what they say and what they respond to. They criticise the things they are attracted to. If anything if you wanted to date her you should imitate what the boyfriend did because it worked for him.

The guy didn’t change, it was her who is frustrated that he can’t get what she wants from him, but wishes she could. Selling the idea that you are the opposite is therefore not recommended, because more often than not, the girls who still take about her ex is still invested in him and thus they are attracted to him, despite being upset with him.

Contrary to what you may believe, a woman talking shit about a guy doesn’t mean she doesn’t like him, because when a woman doesn’t actually like a guy she is just indifferent towards him, and doesn’t talk to anybody about him.

Avoid and let her know why. Women who are going to talk badly of their exes to others have no respect for them or are just hurt enough to struggle with boundaries and vent everywhere.

Eitherway don't engage such topics. If she is willing to jointly talk bad about her ex with you then she would do the same to you with the next guy or her friends. There is a chance she may also hate that you validate her toxic side if she is self aware which would just show weak character of you.

You shouldn't be talking about her ex at all on a date. If she brings him up, she's clearly not over him and on the rebound.

I mean, if you're fine with being the rebound guy, sure, validate her with statements like, "He sounds like a jerk." While this may help you get laid, don't expect anything long-term to develop between the two of you.

Most of the guides I've read say that you're supposed to say that you don't want to talk about her exes, but I haven't gotten a chance to test it out yet.

Don’t slight the competition, those words transfer to you. In business and relationships this is a fact.

If she is constantly talking about her ex than you are in the friendzone and you haven’t given her enough attraction to focus on you and only you.
