The key when talking about sex is to be subtle about it.

So you could say "When your having fun in bed what do you like to do?".

You don't want to say "what are your favorite things to do when it comes to sex?".

It's too forward and as you put it vulgar.

You can branch off of what she talks about. So if she starts talking about oral you could say do you like to 69? Or ask her about what kind of toys she likes or kinks she has.

I guess the question here is, would you really choose food or would you choose sex? Hiding your sexuality could have been your main error here. You didn't have to answer explicitly, even answering slyly like "well...", looking towards her momentarily, and then being like "I do enjoy both" could have been a fun answer. You'd just have to be ready for her follow up.

It's important for you to slow down the pace of the conversation so she doesn't lock you down into an interview mode or have you sitting there anxious. Feel relaxed and play off of her answers. Say what you want to say but don't be too explicit. You want her imagination to be in play and being explicit especially when she's not fully turned on will ruin that for her. You don't always need to directly answer her. Make her work for it at times. Banter at others. You can break her frame without her realizing it if you can keep yourself relaxed and feeling sexual. If all goes well, she may join in with you on that vibe. Otherwise, just don't worry about the outcome, however things go they'll go.

I believe the thing is about keeping it congruent with current vibe and escalation progress. You don’t wanna talk dirty and bold when you were just talking about job and hobbies during a nice meal. I would suggest to stick to innuendos, double-meaning, hidden context to increase the tension and check if the girl follows the lead. “Hmm, I wonder whether I had too good food or too bad sex” “Maybe the thing is I am hungry and you are thirsty?”
