Would recommend mediation. You both agree to the service. You submit all documents, assets, debts, etc. They help you negotiate a fair and legal plan. They write it up. You sign off. They submit to the court, and the judge will sign. Can be done for $1500-5000k.

Not binding unless you choose. Often, you get the exact same deal without wasting time or money. You want to research what's typical for a divorce in your area to make sure you feel comfortable with debating things.

You can also each hire an attorney to sit with you during mediation or review the deal prior to signing off. In my case, no kids and simple (if valuable) assets with lots of known communal debts. I said let's do mediation. I'll pay. You pick the service. You pick an attorney to review the deal, I'll pay for your attorney. The deal will be 50/50 split of everything + sell the house at 50/50 + spousal support (TBD). This is the exact same deal you'll get in court, but will waste money for both of us.

She decided to lawyer up, and then we blew through over $250k of potential wealth 🙃

We were headed that way without a lawyer. Last second she changed her mind and wanted a lawyer to review our settlement agreement. That forced me to get one. In the end she cheated and I was able to get what I needed.

Youre not likely to succeed without a lawyer if she is not fully accepting of 50/50. As soon as she lawyere up, that grimey prick will sing her a song to rid you of your money, fully knowing he wont ever get more than 50%. It only takes one person to escallate for both

with that much money on the line you really ought to get legal representation. She will be amicable until she decides not to be. Best not have to scramble to find legal representation when she's emotionally carpet-bombing you.
