See my post on the principles of a good approach. One of the principles is to approach her with a blank mind, so "you got nice nails" is actually one of the best openers you could have used since it would have been congruent for you in that moment.

The opener is not supposed to carry over the conversation for you. It's supposed to open so you can transition to something else, see my post of the list of verbal techniques. Often after the opener I stack on a few cold reads and eventually qualify.

The focus is wrong. It's not pick up lines, it's the overall structure of a good approach. Everyone will be a little different.

Say whatever you want as long as you keep a neutral tone.

Compliments don't turn women off. The way most men deliver the compliments is what turns women off or even startles them.

Most guys would say "your nails look good! You must've took your time with them!" and they are giddy and raising their emotions when they say it.

You can say something similar but non chalantly without an excited exclamation. "I like the nails, seems like you put in work". Say it like it's normal conversation with an equal because it is.

Let compliments land flat so you aren't handing validation on a silver platter...they are supposed to sound like a half truth because women find full truth boring.

A good mental hack is to practice lowering your pitch and slowing your cadence towards the ends of sentences instead of increasing them. That alone makes you appear more outcome independent and makes the girl feel more comfortable.

An example would be how Nigel Powers compliments Foxy Cleopatra in Goldmember. It was something like "you are as clever as you are beautiful". What made her like it was how calm his mind and tone were on delivery.

I would say ok a closed space like a bus it's better to go with a very indirect approach, then navigate to create a connection. Otherwise she might feel constrained and trapped , which will result in you not being able to reach basic social reciprocity.

“Ugghh… I can already imagine those nails scratching my skin. That’s gotta sting.” And show it with your face you imagining the pain.

Did it once with a hot nail stylist whom I called “Mila Kunis doppelganger” days later. She just laughed and said most guys usually compliment her nails. Then she asked for my hand and slowly scratch it “see, it’s not painful is it?” She said. She broke the touch barrier for me as I intended to. It’s just snowballing from there.
