Yes. I believe that we should.

It would force the law that protections women from genital mutilation to be made gender neutral.

It would end gender discrimination in military draft.

It would end outright gender preference in custody laws (though obviously not end biased judges).

Etc. Etc.

So yes. We support equality.

Depends on the Hayden Rider

This attache would alter the verbiage of the amendment as follows:

Without the Hayden Rider: "Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

"Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

"Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification."

The Hayden rider adds this sentence: The provisions of this article shall not be construed to impair any rights, benefits, or exemptions now or hereafter conferred by law upon persons of the female sex.

If the amendment is passed without the rider, I'm OK with it, but I am curious to see its interpretation . With the rider is something I can not support, as it would effectively be used to legalize discrimination against men

We already have the 14th amendment I fail to see what the proposed equal rights amendment would solve that the 14th amendment doesn’t

I would not spend any time money or energy opposing or supporting the proposed amendment

It would be a waste of time money and resources to actively support or oppose the equal rights amendment

If the ERA is considered law of the land then men’s rights groups should obviously take advantage of this amendment to litigate against MGM and other issues that negatively impact men

Someone hasn't heard of the Hayden rider!

In more immediate terms, we already have the 14th Amendment, which explicitly says that the government can't "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws". Needless to say, that has NOT been what happened. What do you think adding another Amendment that says the same thing would do?

What rights do women lack that require the ERA to fix?

Some here have mentioned the Hayden Rider, which removes equal rights from the ERA. But long ago N.O.W. revised the ERA to meet feminist requirements.

ERA Summit Report
The following proposed language was adopted by the ERA Summit for presentation to the July 1995 NOW National Conference.
"Women and men shall have equal rights and privileges regardless of class, without discrimination based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, ethnicity, national origin or color in the United States and every place and entity subject to its jurisdiction. Women's equality includes the absolute right to make reproductive decisions including termination of pregnancy and to be free from pregnancy discrimination. This does not preclude any law, program or activity that would remedy the effects of prior discrimination."

It's like the Hayden Rider on steroids.
