This hit me hard during my own custody battle: I thought staying calm, being cooperative, and avoiding conflict would show the court I was a stable, reasonable parent.
But it didn’t.
The court didn’t care how calm I was…it cared what I could prove.
Missed overnights? Didn’t log them. Support paid? Couldn’t show a clear record. Flexible with exchanges? That just became the new “normal.”
Turns out…the system isn’t built to reward good intentions. It responds to structure. It responds to receipts. It responds to the parent who shows up with a clear narrative backed by documentation…not feelings.
Since then, I’ve started helping other men approach custody + co-parenting with a more strategic mindset.
I wrote up some thoughts on this if it’s helpful to anyone going through the same thing: “You Weren’t Supposed to Win” https://substack.com/@masonblakex
Would love to hear how others figured this out…or what mistakes you wish you’d avoided earlier on.
