Extract from a book review
This book raises several provocative questions about men’s gender activism that are likely to spur lively debate. These questions are:
Taking the last question first, the main focus of the book is a psychological exploration of the motivations that men have for participating in either the feminist or the men’s rights movements. Through in-depth interviews with men affiliated with both movements, the author concludes that their engagement with their chosen movement is a result of trying to feel better about themselves when confronted with their relative social privilege.
To resolve this conflict, both groups of men engage in privilege renegotiation strategies. For the men’s rights activists, the reaction is to deny gender inequality exists, or that it is a problem that needs to be solved if it does. For the feminist men, the reaction is to engage in introspection and efforts to change their individual attitudes and behavior by engaging with feminism. The main argument is that despite the differences in the movements they choose to affiliate with, both groups are ultimately self-serving in their motivation for doing so. Feminist men in particular are taken to task for their discomfort with structural change as a solution, their discomfort with the idea that giving up privilege is required for progress, and their individual orientation to addressing gender inequality.
Notice how the book positions both sets of MRAs and feminist men as self-serving and frames them as inherently priviledged. I think feminists ultimately dream that men will be totally slaves to them - giving up their wills, their experiences, and any privilege as defined by feminists, so they can be totally controlled by them. Exactly what supposed privileges are men supposed to give up? These people resent that not all men are willing to be totally subjected and self-sacrificing, and that those who try, even they falling short of their moral obligations to their 'oppressed' overlords.
Consider alternatively: How do women respond when presented with evidence of socially gynocentric attitudes and their own privilege of being protected and provided for, increasingly at the expense of men?
