I bounced nightclubs for several years. Women have a look they can give literally any woman that means basically 'help'. They all understand it, and treat it like needing a tampon: you never leave a girl short in those situations no matter your feelings towards her. If you don't know what I'm talking about and you've spent any time at nightclubs, you should pay attention.

You faded into the background because the situation made you reactive, you became stifled, became tense, you froze and from that low self-esteem place it's very difficult to claw back the centre of attention since she has momentum. She claimed the high ground.

Some semblance of this is common; other guys, her friends, etc. This specifically is how you 'outplay' other guys, they can't keep up, they stumble, retreat inside their head, struggle to continue contributing and fade into the background. It's an endurance test. It's the line where actual confidence is defined.

The correct response is to build off the energy she's giving, not be intimidated by it. If you get flustered, it's over. You can't get sidelined, you have to involve yourself in the group. You either become involved, they think you're fun and expressive, enjoy your company, think you're amazing because you can comfortably handle other people and situations, give you the co-sign, or you wilt away in the background and feel like you've been 'exposed'. You step up or get stepped on, you have to rise to the occasion.

Practically, due to the nature of the conversation, it's hard to contribute and that's why 'frame control' exists; you can't win in that lane, she will dominate you in a discussion about makeup and nails every time. So, you have to shift the topic elsewhere where you can retain the centre of attention, continue to add value and involve yourself, and you can't do that passively; you either have to break the flow by effectively 'rising above', be more stimulating than she is, sound like what you have to say has more importance, impose some influence; or, reasonably, you can give people space, let them have their shine (without getting self-conscious about it) and take back the spotlight at a more opportune moment (it sounds easier, but it's harder since you probably lost momentum) but either way you can't just completely yield just because 'a new challenger appears'.

This is the thing, this is what is fun and interesting about social situations; how people's self-esteem interact. You don't necessarily have to dominate every situation and the bar is lower than others in some situations, but you definitely can't always rely on a clean, straight, 1-on-1 uninterrupted interaction, being in the mix you have to cultivate some endurance and responsiveness.

You handled it well… congrats. Newton’s first law is a girl’s friends (not sure whether you’re saying this girl was a friend but …) will always try to cockblock you. This is why wingmen were invented and the game is often to distract the cockblocker because it stems from a need (rationally) to not be ditched at the bar by their girl who’s gone to get a root and / or if she does go home with a guy to make sure it’s the right guy. If you can’t engage them both (super advanced and you usually need to be super good looking) playfully then the next best thing is to get contact details and get out

You have to maintain frame and then engage both of them in conversation with your focus still on the primary target. Good that you still tried to get her number.

There's also the small possibility that the other girl was actually friends but there just playing your pretending to be strangers as a way to purposely get her friend to cockblock you since she wasn't interested.
