Yes, cutting an infant’s penis is child abuse.

[–]lafindestase 18 points19 points20 points 7 months ago* (11 children) | Copy Link

The way people think about penises and foreskin is incredibly misandrist, it’s what led me here in the first place. “It’s gross” - “it’s ugly” - “it’s useless” - “cutting it off is harmless, you’re doing them a favor”

The things that people think and openly say about a natural part of the human body are unreal. Imagine people saying this shit about labia minora in the year 2026.

When doctors or authorities in America talk about this topic they never associate harm with removing this part of the body. It apparently never crosses anyone’s mind that maybe some people would like to have it. It’s just this weird, burdensome “extra thing” that comes attached to the male body for some reason.

As a European female doctor working in public health care with infants every day, the things you describe genuinely infuriate me. Not in an abstract or ideological way, but because I see children’s bodies and vulnerability up close in my job.

The lack of respect for children’s bodily autonomy and physical integrity is staggering. Treating healthy tissue as disposable or as some kind of useless excess attached to a male body, would be unthinkable if we were talking about any other part of a child’s anatomy. Yet here it’s normalized, medicalised and waved away as harmless.

What makes this especially disturbing is how rarely the child’s future perspective is even considered. The possibility that someone might want to keep their body intact doesn’t seem to register at all. That dismissal would be unthinkable in almost any other context involving children and it shouldn’t be acceptable here either.

I’m personally still uneasy about having had my tonsils removed as a toddler for OSAS. While adenotonsillectomy is still indicated in clear cases today, practice has become far more conservative and we now take the immune role of tonsils much more seriously than we used to. It’s a good example of how medical norms shift as we learn more about long-term consequences and why default removal of healthy tissue deserves scrutiny.

I read a study once that said that in the US, approximately 100 babies a year die due to complications from the actual circumcision procedure.

Would you say this is accurate?

[–]NoBlacksmith8137feminist guest 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago (7 children) | Copy Link

To be honest I haven’t read a paper specifically about mortality in the US, I would have to research it. But even if you wouldn’t have those big numbers. The principle would still be to not expose children to unnecessary surgery. They didn’t consent and it’s not for medical necessity. It’s unnecessary risk.

[–]Opening-Rush1618 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh I absolutely agree!

The risks completely outweigh the benefits to basically what is akin to a cosmetic procedure.

[–]oliverofolives 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The religiously brain-washed would open their filthy mouths and pretend that revoking their 'right' to cut the genitals of their male infants is discriminatory.

[–]NoBlacksmith8137feminist guest 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I think in the US it’s mostly performed for non-religious reasons right? In Europe it’s mostly Muslims and Jewish babies

[–]oliverofolives 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There are Muslims and Jews in the U.S. too and they would fight their asses off to retain the right to cut their innocent male infants. They think that that is religious freedom. I mean the infant is a human being and religious freedom is a human right. Where is the religious freedom of the infant as a human being that will be capable of making decisions for himself in the future?

[–]NoBlacksmith8137feminist guest 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But that’s a minority of the circumcisions in the US is what I’m saying. Most of it is cultural I think?

[–]oliverofolives 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think yes, but a big part of it being legal in a lot of places is 'religious freedom'. I mean, where is the religious freedom of the infant?

[–]Opening-Rush16181 point 7 months ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What’s interesting is, if you read into why those religions did start doing circumcisions, Is that it doesn’t apply to the modern day.

[–]oliverofolives 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You put it so fucking beautifully there. That's exactly the issue. Their focus is always on the safety of the procedure, but what about the end goal itself?

"f carried out incorrectly or in inappropriate circumstances" This isn't seeking to ban male genital mutilation, which it should.

I've written to my MP arguing that male genital mutilation should be illegal regardless of the way it's carried out. Naturally, I contrasted the situation to that of female genital mutilation. My MP used to be "Minister for Women and Equalities", so we'll see how far I get...

Those of you who feel strongly about this ought to contact your MP also. It's the only way to enact real change.

[–]ceoofml 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Post the response everywhere.

[–]dyhall9696 10 points11 points12 points 7 months ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Maybe this'll set a precedent so the US and everywhere else will follow suit?

[–]d1ngal1ng 14 points15 points16 points 7 months ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No chance the US follows suit.

[–]dyhall9696 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Unfortunate but I believe you. The only way it'll cease in the US is if people at the top change the recommendations and phase it out.

[–]lafindestase1 point 7 months ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Maybe in 50 years long after the rest of the world (sans some religious parts) had moved on.

[–]NoBlacksmith8137feminist guest 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It absolutely is. This type of bodily harm to an infant that can’t consent without medical necessity (basically aesthetic surgery) is a form of genital mutilation. In my country it’s illegal to perform on infants under the age of 12 months (unless ofcourse there is a medical necessity such as a urological problem). It’s bizarre it’s common practice in the US. Exposing infants to the risks of surgery (even if minor on a large scale) should be avoided. Removing healthy tissue is bad medicine.

Wait, reallt? What country is this?

[–]purpleblossomleft-wing male advocate 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's always baffled me how the world over, female genital mutilation has been considered barbaric and abusive while male genital mutilation is so normalized (in the US) that to avoid it in some places from being done as part of the standard after birth procedures, some parents have to threaten to sue. Hopefully Intersex people are next for consideration of having bodily autonomy from birth, if they aren't included already, although I don't know what the statistics are regarding their mutilation compared to the US.

There's no 'possible' about it.
