Because the draft has been around since forever. A lot of european countries gave it up in the last decade or so, but some are still holding on to it. It does give women a head start, 1-2 extra years of experience and possible make it easier for them to be employed.

But you're not going to have any rational discussions about this with anyone from those countries. The EU is proposing quotas for women in government and corporations, so they really don't care. Women are possibly on an even higher pedestal now than they were before and unless we have a massive economic collapse, this will continue.

In the eyes of society and goverment, men are worthless. Just look at the white feather campaigns.

Devils Advocate: Conscription is meant as a defence, to make sure that your country has a relatively military reserve. Women wouldn't be useful in this, men are.

Well Finland is situated next to Russia, which tried to invade this country back in WW2 (Soviet Union back then). Defense is more important than equality. Military service is mandatory for 6-12 months for all men.

In Israel the women are required to serve too, but Israel is surrounded by their enemies, so it is more easy to justify it.

There are only a few European countries with the draft left. Austria, Finland Denmark, Switzerland, Greece.

It is always less than 12 months. Men have the option to work in Hospitals as opposed to military. Part of the acceptance is that women take a year off at least to have babies. It is sexist, a case was brought to the European court and they said that the equality act does not apply to defence.

Finland was on the side of the Nazi's in the second world war.

The draft should 100% be stopped in all countries. In Austria it is regarded as slave labour.
