Specific advice for you: When he is home, make it very enjoyable for him. Do whatever you have to to not get snippy, have the house clean, your daughter fresh and dressed, and you looking nice. I wouldn't blame him for staying away if whenever he comes home he is assaulted with a dirty house, wife, and daughter and his wife snips at him. I know you feel like it'd be different if he were home more, and I tend to agree, but from his point of view, you could understand why he's not motivated to be there.

It sounds like your husband might be sabotaging efforts to find a house to move because he doesn't want to move. If so, that's passive-aggressive and usually when people resort to being passive-aggressive, it's because s/he feels s/he has no power. That's the last thing you want as an RPW. He knows you don't trust his decisions, thoughts, or feelings about this issue. Or maybe he is trying to get the best deal for your family and aren't trusting his ability to buy a house. If that's the case, you have to trust his abilities and trust that if he is low-balling houses he will either get one for a great price OR learn to bid higher.

Tempest has suggested to me that I stop making decisions for 6 months and my husband will step into the void it creates and start making them naturally. I'm not make sure everyone's needs are met (food, shelter, bills paid, etc) and be a good wife, but all other decisions are dropped. It's hard for me because in the moment I think something needs to be done now when it really doesn't. We don't need to decide on wood flooring or water filters or 401Ks in the next six months even though sometimes I get panicky about it. You might feel like 'after we move I will stop making decisions' and maybe you will but I guarantee there will be something you believe needs to be decided/fixed right now and it will be hard for you to stop.

General- I see people do this a lot, and maybe it's human nature but when a person gets unhappy with something he or she finds a plan or program that solves/cures the problem. Then the person thinks the program/plan is too restrictive or doesn't full "work for me" so the person treats the program like a buffet, picking this part but leaving that part. For example, I've seen people say they want to eat Paleo but include bread and cheese and less veggies. Um, what? Then you aren't eating Paleo. It works but you have to DO IT fully, you can't pick and chose parts because suddenly you are doing pretty much what you were before but calling it a diet. I see women do this with RP a lot. They want to take parts of it but leave parts that don't "work" for them. And that's okay as long as that part isn't central to the entire foundation of the theory. One part where I have seen this the most is when women disagree or dislike a choice their husband has made, instead of accepting it, these women fight it. They want their husband's to make the decisions, but only make the decisions they want made. "I want you to decide where we go to dinner, but I want Mexican for dinner, so I want you to decide on Mexican." It doesn't work like that. Basically, "I like RP when he does want I want and when he doesn't make decisions I like, I overrule him or persuade him differently".

If you can't trust his decision making skills, I don't see RP working in the relationship. Now the question is, is it his decision making skills that are the problem or is it your trusting him?

If marriage counseling helped, I think you should find a therapist who will support and help within a 'traditional marriage' framework and start back. I know you can't be in counseling forever, but from everything you've posted on RPW, it seems like your marriage is in serious danger.

Also, I'm sorry about the depression. That's hard. I've been depressed and it makes everything about 50X harder. Maybe you should go to counseling yourself for the depression.

It's not a point of motivation to be home. It's a point of he's physically unable to work a 10-16 hour shift 6-7 days a week in the mines doing very labor intensive work and then drive 4-5 hours round trip home to spend time with his family. There are times when he works 8s and he comes home 1 or 2 days during the week but he's exhausted. He eats dinner, spends some time with our daughter and then goes to bed. He TRIES to be home but it's hard for him to do.

Yes, he probably feels as though he's got no power in this decision to move because it's not up for debate. It's either we move so that we can be a family together or I leave and find someone who is willing to. I am not willing to give up on this, and I know you women are against that. But if it comes between my mental health and letting him continue to ignore the problem I'm going to choose my mental health. It's not like I haven't given him choices in the process though. We both have to mutually agree on a house, and he gets to decide the offer price. I know that's so beyond what you ladies would think is ok, but I can't live like this any more. When my daughter was first born and I was alone and dealing with postpartum depression it got to the point that the only reason I didn't end it was because no one would would know for days and by then my daughter would have starved to death. Though I'm past that the depression is still there and I NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE. And yes, I've tried getting a hold of a therapist to talk. Problem is that everyone around here is booked. No one is taking on any more patients. And I'm talking a 50 mile radius. Like I said, it's a small town in the middle of no where.

I'm not taking away all of my husbands choices. 2 weeks ago he went ice fishing. I didn't say no. I let him have his free time because he needed it. I know that time frame sounds absurd but he doesn't get a whole lot of free time. There are things that I don't trust him with. I'm working on it. It's not going to be some magical over night transformation. There's a bit of both his decision making skills and me not trusting him. I would try the void thing but I'm at a loss of how I could possibly do that in my situation? I try to give him control as much as possible in our time together. I try to look pretty (though it's hard to be feminine in -20F). It's more like I put on make up and then the rest of me looks like that kid from "a christmas story". I try to keep up the house. I try to make dinner. It's just so crippling and tedious day after day after day alone.

Do you think it's proper to refer to the people you are asking for advice as "you women"?

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes. Would you have preferred ya'll?

[–]MrsStrom1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ya'll sounds less confrontational. Personally, I like "yous".

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Huh. And here I thought I was being respectful.

Can I ask you what he was doing before you guys got married? Was he working like this as well or did he have another job? What made you believe he would genuinely be around more when you two decided to start a family?

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

He did road construction while we were dating. It was a little the same but I got to travel more to be with him. That was pretty awesome!

What made you believe he would genuinely be around more when you two decided to start a family?

I trusted him at his word. LOL

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You have absolutely no respect for a man who is busting his ass first you and your kid.

[–]little_red_0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

didn't really list a whole lot of his faults because I don't really want to husband bash.

-"I, however, seem to have picked a very bad husband... "

I'm just going to leave this right here.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why? That seems an odd place to put it rather than under the actual part that I said it. Yup, I said that. Thanks for taking things out of context. :O)

[–]little_red_1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

you laugh about trusting his word, you say "maybe losing money for a year will teach him a lesson!", this man busts his ass to provide a home and a life for you and your child and all you do is demand more of him and give him an irritable woman to come home to when he does get the chance. you've had people give you good advice on this thread, but it seems you'd like for him to change and ignore your own failures as a wife and magnify the few good things you are possibly doing.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I felt it was ironic that you ladies preach trust and submission, not something I disagree with entirely, and I was asked why I genuinely thought he would be home. Because I trusted him. I felt it was ironic. That's where the lol comes in. Perhaps that's a major part of what has led me to distrust him. I don't know.

Yes I'm asking for advice on how to be better. I've gotten advice on how to be better, thank you.

[–]Nonmedicated4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know you say you were depressed, as if it is over, but from looking over your responses it seems like you still are. Every answer is coming through a huge lens of negativity and helplessness. I feel for you, I truly do.

I don't know what it will take for you to get out of this dark fog and see all the options and shots at happiness you still have here. Depression is pretty insidious and can really cut your legs out from under you.

You to make self care a priority. Feed yourself better. You have access to the internet, make use of it to learn how to cook for one. Get dressed and shower. Get a lock for your child's room, baby proof the crap out of it and get a shower. Hire a mother's helper if you can afford it. If you can't bring yourself to do it for you, do it for your kid. She needs a good role model. Keep fighting for yourself.

Maybe your husband doesn't notice when you have the house nice for him, or maybe he does and like many men with difficult labor jobs, he is just fucking exhausted when he comes home and can only think of getting clean and off his feet.

You are in this together and it can be difficult to see this between the separation, having an active little one in the house, and your depression and isolation.

You have listed some big negatives going on, can you reframe any of them? You husband is willing to compromise and find a new place to live. He clearly values your marriage. Your husband is working a labor intensive job in order to provide for the family he love and values. He has gone to therapy with you to improve your marriage. You guys are on the same side it's a difference of strategy at worst. Please keep this in mind as you go forward.

[–]ab_bott 6 points6 points6 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Definitely sounds like depression to me. Telling your husband you are unhappy and want to move isn't wrong. You can't be a good wife if you are unhappy. Do you have any hobbies? Find something you are passionate about- that's how I keep my depression at bay. Its nice to have something exciting to look forward to. It is also a reason to make you shower/get ready for the day. In my experience the lazier I am the more depressed I feel, it's a vicious cycle.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I used to have hobbies. I'm a pretty good artist. I tried getting back into drawing but since my daughter is 3 she gets into everything. She got a hold of one of the pieces I was working on and destroyed it. My heart just about broke when that happened. I also garden, do work outside, and found a passion for wood working but the weather here (northern MN) hasn't permitted any of those. Winter here is an awful awful time and exacerbates depression. :O(

[–]ab_bott 2 points2 points2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Wood working huh? That is always something I have been interested in.. how did you get started?

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I bought an old gun rack for my husband and refinished it. I found sanding, finishing, and putting it all back together to be very soothing. I would suggest to start with something like that. Pick something up at a garage sale for cheap and test the waters with it. You'll find out if you like it or not. And if you don't you're not in too deep.

[–]sugarcrushEndorsed Contributor2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link

How old is your daughter? I'm guessing she's little since you are worried about her getting into things and aren't cooking for her yet. Don't be afraid to stick her in a playpen or something while you shower. I promise it won't kill her to scream for 10 minutes while you shower.

Cooking for one: utilize your freezer! Buy a package of something, proportion what you need for the next couple of days, and then freeze the rest.

I would also find an excuse to get out of the house at least once a day so you feel motivated to get dressed. Take your daughter to the park, mom group, go walk around target, library, anywhere.

I 100% agree that you need to solve the long term problem of him being away all week long. Seeing your husband MAYBE 1 day a month isn't really a marriage to me... I would do anything to fix it. However, it sounds like you are browbeating him into it. Are your finances in a place that moving is possible? I'm wondering why he is bidding so low on the houses. Is it because he actually doesn't want to move and feels like you gave him an ultimatum? And isn't he concerned about his daughter growing up without her dad around? He wants a country atmosphere but is never around to actually be in it? This is a very curious situation to me. I would be interested in hearing his side.

Edit: some more thoughts... When your husband is home, do you tend to stay in the same routine of pajamas all day, house messy, not cooking? That combined with being snippy might be contributing to his reluctance to move to a place where you could be together, which is understandable because who wants to be around that? I understand that right now you are in a probably in a bad cycle of your situation making you depressed, which causes you to be lazy about everything, which makes you feel more depressed, but you really need to do everything you can to drag yourself OUT of that cycle. Hobbies, getting out of the house, etc.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Our daughter is 3. She's a curious one and rather destructive when left alone. She's now out of a crib and into a big girl bed. During the summer we get out pretty often but it's winter in northern MN and it's awful. The nearest walmart/target/social area to go is an hour away. I have a car that gets great gas mileage and I used to do that often when we first lived here but it puts a BIG dent in our finances. Filling up every other day costs quite a bit.

Yea, I had to brow beat him into it. For about 2 years I told him how unhappy I was and continued to suggest that we move. Finally I did give him an ultimatum. I am extremely unhappy because I felt I was lied to when we got married (he said he would be home more). Yes we're in a financial position to be moving. We've got the cash and can get a loan for a nicer house.

He says he misses our daughter but when he's home he doesn't do much with her. He's always busy or sleeping. I don't blame him for that he works a shitty job.

Well, like I said it takes me about a day to adjust to him being home. But I've tried having the house nice and clean, I've tried making dinner ready for him when he gets home, I've tried looking pretty for him but it goes unnoticed. I have the house clean and 15 min of him being home it's a disaster. He comes inside and changes tires leaving oil slicks in the entry way, our sinks become black with tar and oil when he washes his hands, I'll make dinner and then put our daughter in the bath and to bed and he doesn't bother to put the dishes in the dish washer even though I've asked him. It's a bunch of little things that slowly just wear you down to the point of crying in frustration. I know I'm failing at these things. But it's hard to care when he shows me he doesn't and when he's away so much.

I bought him the MMSL book in hopes that things will change. But, you're right, I need to drag myself out of this awfulness.

[–]suRubix2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How are you in a financial position to get a bigger house but not in a financial position to drive your car?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this is an excellent point.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A few years ago I was taking care of my mom while she was dying. She took a big life insurance policy on herself when she thought something was wrong. She asked me to give up college and come home to help take care of her. I did because I felt obligated to as my sister lives far away and has a career. So for 2 years I helped take care of her until she died. She paid me with her life insurance money. I got a big lump sum that's sitting in our savings account designated for a house.

Then when my husband saw how much I was spending in gas he didn't like it and asked me to cut back. So I cut it back to once a week.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

why did you buy him MMSL, you havent described anything hes doing wrong other than working so hard that he has to be away from home

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well, someone suggested it to me. I read some on the website and thought perhaps my husband might like this book. Perhaps it would give advice to bring us closer together. Perhaps it would make him feel more confident. Perhaps he might just like to read it and then ignore it. I don't know, it was worth a shot to do something rather than nothing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

you are the one with all the problems, not him.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't say he had any problems. You're irrationally angry right now and just being mean while I'm giving calm concise answers. I focused on my faults here because that's what ya'll asked of me. Yes I have problems. I do not deny this but openly express them asking for help and advice. Once you read my honest answers you decide you don't like me and then bash me... Thanks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wasn't even going to allow you to post this entitled whiny husband bashing bitchfedt at all, so watch it. You are a selfish, solipsistic mess. What do you want to hear, that you're right and your husband's an asshole? Go to r/relationships, they'll all tell you try hat.

You've already told us on other threads you think you married a bad man. I can't believe he is working so hard just to come home time cranky bitch who feels "irritated" because She's used to being alone. Ew

[–]little_red_0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Have you heard about The Surrendered Wife? As long as were on the topic of using books to improve ourselves and our relationships, it seems only fair that you could pick on up as well, no?

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed. I ordered it on amazon a few days ago. It's being shipped.

[–]wendy-fly1 Star1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Where does he stay during the week? How does he feel about your living situation? What does he think the solution is? What is his long term and short vision for your family?

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

He usually stays at one of his cousins houses that live slightly closer or at a super cheap dingy hotel. In the two years that I told him how unhappy I was he found no problem with our living situation and continued to try to convince me that we had a good thing since our house is payed for. He still doesn't like the idea of moving and where we're moving to. There is no vision for our family. I've asked about plans and what he sees in our future and he just says "relaxing and spending time together". I've told him of my desire to work and start a career he doesn't oppose it but he doesn't support it either? I get "yea, sure, that's fine".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

What do you want over the insistence that you want a future with a career that takes YOU away from HIM, a party with cake? He's working like a dog and visualizes a future relaxing with his wife, Oh no. Man, Did he make a mistake marrying you. You are not a helpmeet for a man, you are a millstone around his neck

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps not everyone is happy with a life of being a SAHM and they want something more. Why is it wrong for me to want to help contribute to our house hold finances? Why is it wrong for me to want a career? Why is it wrong to want to move to be closer to my husband so that I can feel normal with him and not anxious or cranky? Why is it wrong to want to move so that I can be a better wife and better parent? Why is any of this wrong and why are you so hatefully bashing me when I've been honest?

[–]little_red_2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You do not have to be a SAHM but the term 'career' is one where you will put your 'job' first to make it so. A 'job' is one where you can help supplement the income. Putting your family first is what RPW believes in. You can WANT To move to be closer to your husbands work but you DEMAND and give him an ULTIMATUM of your way or the highway - that is what we take issue with. You don't need to be anxious and cranky just because he's away often - you are not the only one who has dealt with this in RPW let alone this thread, and I guarantee you none of "us women" handled it the poor way that you are. You can be a better wife and parent where you are, you chose not to because you aren't getting your way. You want what YOU want and if he wont surrender to that then fuck him, you're out. That is why RPW takes issue with what you present.

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I didn't know career meant that. I see career more as a long term job where you have room for advancement. Like I said, I knew ya'll would not agree with that choice I made. I do not deny that. It's something that I did before I joined RPW. It was a choice between my mental health and continuing to let my husband have the reigns on this decision. Once depression has its claws in you it is a hell of a task to shake it. I'm not talking about "I feel sad for a few days" but more considering taking your own life kind of depression. It's just not that easy to get rid of it. People who have never had it think it to be fictitious and that we want a pity party. And I'm happy for you people who have never had to experience it, because I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Once again I know I'm handling this poorly. I never said I wasn't. But I came here asking for advice, explaining my situation honestly. u/s0nicfreak was pretty much the only person who gave me actual practical advice. Many others chose to ask questions and give anecdotal evidence of their past experiences and what they did. I answered them all as honestly as I could with out trying to hide anything. And then a few just chose to attack me.

I came to RPW because you don't believe in divorce. I didn't want to go to r/relationships because that's all they ever say is "leave his ass" "You're better off with out him" with out giving any practical advice to keeping a healthy relationship.

I see a lot of advice on this thread, but the way it comes off is that you only address what you are comfortable with. I still don't understand why he needs to read MMSL, other than your lack of of time together (his sacrifice to provide for you and his child) I don't understand what it is that you see since it wasn't shared. I honestly don't want to scare off potential RPW but you admitted that you don't trust his word. He will never be your Captain if you keep grabbing the wheel. You say you don't believe in divorce, which is admirable and I agree with you on this, then you say you will leave him if he does not move from the house you are in now - you have to understand the conflict here.

I would not leave my husband over trivial matters I've stuck with him this long haven't I? Though I would leave him if he didn't want to be a family with us. It's not a little trivial issue to not actually be with your wife. It's a huge issue. Like I said I don't want to go husband bashing to the world. He has done things in the past to slowly degrade my trust in him. We've been together 9 years. There are little things that happen all the time to slowly wear down trust. Like water constantly dripping on a rock it wears it down over time. Then there are bigger things, nothing like cheating, but they still break trust. If you truly want to know the specifics then PM me and I'll tell you. But this is where I'm coming from trying figure out and to adapt slowly to a RP relationship.

None of that is wrong and now you have revealed yourself to be a troll

Oh dear God, You're right! I just looked in the mirror! How could I have been so blind?!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

you cant change him, you can only change yourself. why is he always away? is it for work? my ex was a line haul trucker and was gone 10-12 days out of 2 weeks. i cleaned the house the 2 days before he came home and made sure everything was like heaven while he was home. is he providing for you and you daughter? what is your sex life like when he comes home? what kind of work doe she do, is it hard and stressful?

are the local people so terrible you cant stomach the thought of creating even passing friendships to have stuff to do? are there no clubs or groups or craft guilds or anything you can get involved with ? the local church? nothing? and why cant you go look at houses by yourself?

are you just disappointed that this is how life turned out?

[–]Mrswhiskers[S] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He does abatement at the mines up north. It's a very physically demanding job. We have a shared checking account like all married people. I don't know how else to answer that question. Sex life is minimal. He's tired and stressed after work. It's hard to go more than one round when we do have sex because my body is just so unused to it.

I have "friends" that I met though church. I've hung out with them a few times but they're all SAHMs that do home schooling with several children. It's hard to find time to do anything together with them. But we're such different people that it's very awkward being around them. They're all very "goodie tooshoos" people. We did bible study last year and I signed up for it again this year but it dissolved because no one could find the time to attend besides myself and one other person. A lot of the inability to do things out in the community comes from a lack of babysitters. I have 2 girls I call but they're not often available because they're very active in 4H and other community events. Day care isn't an option because the only place within 30 miles closes at 5pm and all the clubs are during the evening.

Yea, I'm disappointed. I gave up a lot to be here with the promise that my husband would be home. I had a kid under the guise that I wouldn't be a single parent. I thought I'd have a LIFE with someone. I should have a career by now. I should have friends by now. But I don't. And it's disappointing.

I have to say I get it's hard to have an SO who is not there. Mine owns his own business plus has two side ventures going on as well. I understand when you say you need a day to adjust to him coming home, but don't you know when he is exactly coming home so you could start adjusting your train of thoughts to be appropriate for when he does arrive? I make sure the house is in order and there is everything he needs when he is here because that is my job. He doesn't not go to work just because he "feels" a certain way and I had to learn to look at my surrounding the same way; the house is my job. It is my job to get up and get ready everyday and to do my tasks. This also helped combat my own anxiety issues because if you let them eat at you, they will.

I was also under the impression my SO would not be working this amount this far into our relationship. Guess what? Just because their intentions are to be around more it doesn't always happen. It sucks, but ultimately they are the ones going out of their way to support the family. I think he does value your opinion, but what I don't think has happened is a real discussion on why HE doesn't truly want to move? Is it really that big of an issue for him? If so, why? What are the top few reasons he is against it? because if it has taken you years to finally come to this now then it has obviously been pushed and pushed as a topic.

All I know is that if my SO told me we were moving then that's that. I know far too well that everything he does is for us and our life together. He would never do something that would put me in a bad situation intentionally or move me somewhere he didn't think was a correct environment.

but don't you know when he is exactly coming home so you could start adjusting your train of thoughts to be appropriate for when he does arrive?

It sounds crazy but no. There are a lot of times when he says he'll get off on a certain day and that day comes and goes and he's working the same job 3 days later because things got backed up. There are also days where he says he'll be home on a certain day and then show up 2 days early because everything went better than expected. Now I just don't want him to tell me when he thinks the job will be done because it gets my hopes up.

but what I don't think has happened is a real discussion on why HE doesn't truly want to move?

I've tried discussing this issue with him in depth. His reasons are "he hates the city". Well I've tried explaining that we wont be living IN the city and that we should try to get something similar to our home now but he refuses to sell the house we have now so that we can afford something similar with out taking out a loan. He also thinks that the country is going to crash and burn like it did back in the 30s. He wants a "safety net" to protect us so that we can move back here and "live off the land" if shit goes down. But this safety net is going to cost us thousands every year. He thinks having renters here will be all hunky dory and that we'll never have issues. I've heard too many horror stories about bad renters to not advise him against this. Especially with a house 2 hours away. His uncle, Dave Ramsey, and several other people have advised him against this. This is a BAD decision but he refuses to listen because he just doesn't want to give up the house. There's nothing that he's ever said to me to let understand this level of attachment. Maybe he's got bodies buried here? (joke) I don't know.

[–]eatplaycrushEndorsed Contributor1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hahaha, I like your joke because I've got a bad sense of humor.

I don't really know how to advise you on the coming home thing then. Typically I can plan out when my SO will be here so I can get my attitude in check if it's not ideal so I don't have what he calls "bitch tone."

Weird. I think our SO's are the same person lol jk but mine also believes FIRMLY that this country is about to go bat shit crazy. I can't say I don't agree.. Our dollar has no legitimate backing system and 4 high level bankers have "committed suicide" within the last couple months. I can totally understand his safety net issue because it is a real issue in our country. As with renting the house, I agree and disagree. We are renting ours, but our landlord had horrible experiences before us. We've been fixing her home up while living here, under her permission of course, but not everyone is evil. Typically, bad idea if you truly care about a home though. IMO.

Either way, I hope you get this sorted out. Best of luck.

Thanks! This is the best advice I've gotten. Thank you for explaining the reasoning behind it.

How do your kids deal with being in the car all day? What do you bring along for them to do at places like coffee shops? Where do you find these things to do like ballet? Is it in the paper?

Yes I understand the problem is with me. I need direction and purpose to my life. I'm hoping that with this move I can get purpose and direction again through a job or school or something. I had a job last year it was the best our relationship had ever been because I had a direction and purpose again. But I was let go because they no longer needed me due to kids moving out of the district. I was the last hired so I was the first to go. Thanks again for your advice. :O)

Cool. Thanks!

[–]MrsStrom1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

First, there occasionally is a point in which an ultimatum is the only thing left to do. The ultimatum comes after you have exhausted all other avenues. From what you've written here, it seems you have made a reasonable effort at fixing the problem. However, I'm not sure you're really there yet.

Second, I feel you. Mr. Strom works out of town quite a bit. Sometimes I get to go with him, sometimes I dont. Its hard. You go from being extremely lonely with entirely too many decisions to make on your own, to not having a second to yourself and someone else messing up the order you had everything in.

My advice: Start sexting each other. Send him dirty pics and explicit messages. Get him all riled up so that the moment he gets home, he's dragging you into the bedroom for a quickie. This gives both of you something to look forward to. Plus, it really helps establish intimacy and emotionally reconnect you. Once you have those feel good hormones flowing, its much easier to play nice.

Put your chores on a schedule. Monday through Friday have an hour or two of cleaning scheduled. This should help give you an idea of what your schedule should look like. Having specific things to do on specific days gives you a purpose for each day.

You mentioned elsewhere that you like art. Pick up a hobby your daughter can't ruin. I like sewing. Aprons are a nice way to start. Then you can work your way up to more complicated projects. I just finished a quite lovely corset. It helps give a sense of accomplishment and helps to pass the time.

Lastly, hit up marriedmansexlife.com. Leave it open for your Mr. to find. Give up making decisions for 6 months (Tempest is a smart lady). Set your Mr. down and explain that you'll be leaving big decisions up to him from here on out. Tell him that you trust him to make the best decisions he can and will back him up no matter what he decides. He might worry that you'll blame him should things not go as planned. Reassure him that you trust him and won't blame him if things don't work out like he hoped- everyone is human and you'll love him all the same. He might test out his new powers and make a few crappy decisions, he might not. Its entirely likely that after a few weeks he'll really take the reins and do what needs to be done.

Provided you haven't married a man-child or complete psychopath, these things should work. Good Luck.

You say the problem is that you're a stay at home mom and he is always away, but it sounds like the real problem is that you're unhappy - you're not unhappy with him, you're unhappy with yourself. You use words like 'isolated' and make an excuse to not shower or change clothes because of your child and lack of exposure to the outside world for the day. I haven't dealt with depression but it sounds like you are letting this get the best of you and it's snowballing out of control. You have no friends and no life because you don't go out; you don't go out because you have no friends and no life.

You know your feelings and behaviors towards your husband are both irrational and unhealthy, but you don't bring up any points about him instigating these feelings other than just "being". Harboring resentment towards your spouse for just being around is going to be expressed directly and indirectly and will only cause your relationship to deteriorate at an alarming rate, especially given that is his only interaction with you. Why would you look forward to going home to someone who only gave off a cranky, agitated and nervous vibe? You should look forward to seeing him whenever he gets the chance to be home, be warm and welcoming.

Making demands of your husband financially and romantically is only going to work against you. If he is the breadwinner and you are pressuring him to take out a loan so you can be happy in the bigger and better home in the city you spend your day in, that seems a bit unfair to me. You COULD make things work where you live, it just seems like you don't care to. Will a more expensive house in a different neighborhood fix all of your problems? You assert "...if he wants that kind of life we're going to have to pay more for it...", does he? It sounds like hes fine where he is, you are the one that wants that lifestyle.

Be a good wife while hes away by sending him messages knowing how much you miss sleeping next to him. Send him a sexy picture now and then. Tell him how excited you are to cook this new meal you saw on TV that reminded you of him (you know he loves that gumbo you guys had at that one restaurant once upon a time, etc). He will value your opinion and advice when you start valuing his, and valuing him.

... You may want to read a few of the comment replies I already made. I didn't really list a whole lot of his faults because I don't really want to husband bash. As far as being unhappy yes, I am unhappy. Being alone and not with my husband has made me pretty unhappy one certainly leads to another. If you've never been away from your husband for months on end perhaps you should experience it to understand the feeling more.

I never said I was making demands on my husband romantically. Nor did I ever say I was trying to get a "Bigger or better" home in the city. I am compromising with him and we're looking at houses that have 1+ acres of land, so that he doesn't feel trapped. 1+ acres of land in that area DOES cost more. But as far as the "city" is concerned I want to move to that specific area so that I can go back to college and earn my degree so that I can help financially and my husband doesn't have to literally kill himself for work and to support us.

Be a good wife while hes away by sending him messages knowing how much you miss sleeping next to him.

Well thanks! I know I'm doing at least one thing right now. :O)

I have read your comment replies. Not only on this thread either. I've painted the bigger picture from your general posting history.

Sounds like it makes more sense to move closer to where he works than just closer to the town you're nearby now.

We are moving closer to where he works.
