[Mod] Now enforcing minimum length posts

Reddit View
June 11, 2014

Put some effort into your posts and comments folks, no reaction gifs, no "I lol'd" responses.

Automoderator will now remove short comments and posts that took no effort.

Pun chains, and mockery chains are annoying and will be removed on sight.

Edit: to clarify, a mockery chain is as follows:

Post: Feminism did XYZ

Reply: But my feelz!

Next Reply: Your feelings are literally rape!

Next Reply: Another sarcastic remark!

Edit 2: To those of you who care about the quality of the sub, please report these sorts of posts. It helps us immensely.

I don't browse much of the rest of reddit, only a handful of other subs. Do you know of any other with this type of enforcement for high quality? I'm not talking about shit subs like SRS where they immediately ban and delete if you're male.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child) | Copy

I beat this drum often, but /r/askhistorians has a comment standard that is extremely high, probably even more so than here

They are also a living breathing example of a sub that has well over 250,000 subscribers and has still managed to maintain a high level of quality

[–]Endorsed ContributorWe_Are_Legion3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy

Agreed. This was one of the last remaining complaints from the previous stickies too, I think.

I think that about covers it. As a subreddit under constant focus, with so many new people, and a topic of discussion being something that requires tons of prior reading as well as personal effort, how it manages to retain a measure of quality is probably only due to excellent modship.

Definitely looking forward to seeing how this change plays out. My only concern is it might force people to elongate some points that are possibly valid enough when put succinctly. For a lot of people, a longer length doesn't necessarily lead to more interesting posts.

It is frustrating when I can make a point in less than 5 words because someone has already laid the groundwork and I'm only interested in proposing a question or correction to a particular within.

I can begrudgingly see the value of tossing the baby out with the bathwater here though.

Keep the Reddit Culture BullshitTM in the rest of Reddit. We want that here as much as we want feminism.

[–]1Zackcid7 points8 points  (0 children) | Copy

Haha this is typical reddit culture right there. Especially those "pun chains" -- it's become a knee-jerk reaction where I minimize the comment chain the moment I smell it coming.

This right here. Can we get a qualifier? Sometimes, in fact most times answers to questions don't require a wall of txt.

I'm not against this new standard, not at all. But could we get some clarification?

have been reporting posts and comments that contribute nothing and am happy to see things are actually done about it.

really dont want to see this sub become a circlejerk pos sub

The reports are our lifeline. Rest assured we'll notice if you flag it.

Report them. When in doubt. Report.

[–]cooltrip2 points3 points  (0 children) | Copy

I always try to add some interesting/helpful/worthy of consideration point on every comment I make, even if the comment looks really short or if it looks mockery. There's always some point to contribute.

Nice one. I always worry if I get on the moderators' nerves with the report button usage but at the same time it always feels like it works.

I always worry if I get on the moderators' nerves with the report button usage

No, you are not getting on our nerves. In fact, you're making our job much easier by doing so.

The report button essentially puts a big red flag on a post/comment so that we can take action. Personally, I really appreciate people who report obnoxious/low-quality content because otherwise I'd naturally just gloss over it out of habit.

It might be unwise to penalize short pithy concise comments.

Knowing how to be concise and sharp is a skill RP should value.

Sometimes a 3 word comment is the most powerful way to make a point. Shouldn't be removed automatically.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] -4 points-3 points  (12 children) | Copy

Maybe so, but more often than not, they're not any good. So, we live with the consequences of shitty "reckt" posts.

[–]slcjosh3 points4 points  (11 children) | Copy

weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak weak

Lame lame Lame lame Lame lame Lame lame.

See its easy to surpass this.

[–]puaSenator0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

No one is saying it's a perfect system, but that it's definitely an improvement. How often do you think people are going to post shit like "rekt rekt rekt rekt" just to get around the automod -- and eventually get themselves banned -- vs people that think twice about posting a stupid comment and instead choose not to?

What's most likely going to happen is those stupid comments will get downvoted to hell or just not get posted at all, while others start putting more effort into their comments.

Seems like a win-win to me.

[–]slcjosh0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Fair point. But for the sake of simplicity, sometimes a post only needs a few word response. No one can deny that. I see the good. But there is always a trade off.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] -1 points0 points  (8 children) | Copy

See how easy it is to get banned?

[–]Gstreetshit2 points3 points  (5 children) | Copy

Did you really just ban him or are you saying if a person wants to be a smartass about it they will get banned? It seems like he was just pointing out that a bot can't determine context.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] -3 points-2 points  (4 children) | Copy

I put him in the corner for a few hours.

The fact is, we may still have trolls, and we will still ban trolls like we always do. This move is specifically to encourage honest contributors to step up their game.

[–]slcjosh2 points3 points  (3 children) | Copy

And if you'd looked at my post history you'd know I wasn't a troll. I submit what I consider good content to this sub daily.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] -2 points-1 points  (2 children) | Copy

I, too, was just making a point. Anyway- cheers!

[–]Gstreetshit1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Ok, I get it.

OP was that people can get around the bots

mod response was that its easy to ban people for being fuck heads.

I got it.

I thought you were just being an unreasonable cunt. Txt mask shit like this sometimes.

[–]slcjosh1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

To be fair...I did get 4 upvotes. I was making a point. I do appreciate the unban.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children) | Copy

The post filter won't remove trolls, it never has- that's what the mods are for. The post filter was to encourage higher quality posts from honest users.

[–]the_Milkweed1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

I got '22' upvotes on an image I linked to a one sentence comment. I understand we don't want reddit knee jerk bullshit, but do we have to remove all the fun. Sometimes this subreddit can be wayyyyyy to serious, I like to bring humor to those around me. Especially when some of them are enraged men who feel alone because they have been lied to their entire lives. This seems like unnecessary policing. If it was un-wanted, than why do I have upvotes.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] -1 points0 points  (1 child) | Copy

You can be funny, but be smart funny, not low-effort funny.

If it was un-wanted, than why do I have upvotes.

Because it's reddit.

If you want to go have pun threads, do it in /r/funny. If you want discussion about sexual strategy, do it here.

[–]the_Milkweed1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Yea, no.... Puns can suck my dick, but alright I'll follow the rules.

[–]Senior Contributorexit_sandman1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Could you also establish this for new threads? After all, these single link-posts without explanation start to be rather annoying.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
