The mark-up on diamond rings is ridiculous, Its real worth is probably closer to a grand and he wont get 700 in a pawn shop. Source - I cut gems for a hobby. (proof on request). I am surprised in this day and age jewellery shops are still in existence, there are multiple documentaries on how de beers manipulated the market and you will even get articles on the likes of cracked.com (or fark ,lol). If that girl is asking for a promise ring, she will be looking for the same gratification on every run of that blue pill ladder.

If you had a decent level of frame (aka she was thinking you of potentially being in the AF role), you've got yourself an enamored plate. Being comically cheap - especially when its clear you do have money and do lavish it on YOU - works so well on rich chicks who have always had every guy coming out of the pocket before sex.
