Depends on his frame and brand of humor. Humor is a sign of intelligence, and factors into charisma. Also, 5'8 is not that short. My take on this is that your height difference may be eclipsed by his social presence. Don't think that the height will do the work for you. It will get you noticed but that's it, the rest you will have to achieve through action - how you interact socially, i.e., your charisma, your frame, confidence.
