Do you think there is an optimal number of plates to have at any one time or is it just down to personal preference?

Blackdragon has a pretty good system he calls relationship boxes.

Three is personally my sweet spot. Any more and it becomes unwieldy.

Agreed. You also need to budget time to find the next one, as plates don't stay around forever.

This came to mind http://i.imgur.com/BcnBRsx.jpg

But seriously. All preference. I had five when I was on holiday because it was just me and my hobbies besides them. Now that I'm back three is good.

what movie is that?

[–]TheRedMoss0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No idea. Not much of an anime guy, I just found it around here somewhere.

I have 3 right now. Its the most I've ever had and I must say its challenging. I may have to cut one loose.

What's challenging about it? See them once a week at most, blow them off if you don't feel like seeing them.

[–]RPthrowaway1232 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well I never spun 3 at once before, so its a bit of an adjustment for me

[–]abcd_z2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only see them on your terms, on your time. If you only want to see them once a month, do that. You should never spend time with a woman because you feel you have to or are somehow obligated to.

the better one for weekends

the second better for fridays

and the third one for during the week

This is a good way to split it up, I'll start doing this and see how it goes. I wake up at 5 am on weekdays which makes seeing one then harder.

2-3 or none.

I'd say you need to find a balance. You need enough plates for yourself, your family and any possible guests who come round and a few spares in case you break some.* Of course you have to keep the maximum load of the cupboard in mind because you do NOT want the cupboards to come off the walls.

Also, do consider whether you need them to be microwave/dishwasher safe as not all are and you also do NOT want to ruin expensive crockery this way, trust me.

Are you thinking of having a dinner party? The plates you use will be judged by your more discerning guests so how many and what types of plate you have is an important life decision.

*If you do break some, remember to use a dustpan and brush and sticky-tape to clear up any shards as they can cause nasty injuries.

If you treat this post as a metaphor, it works stunningly well.

2 at the very least so you have somewhere else to go. 3 or more will give you enough variability to mitigate slipping up.

Remember re: plates. Always be replacing or bringing new ones into the rotation.

[–]SemenMoustache0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can only handle 2 at a time. If I have 3 then I end up having to sacrifice something.

Work, gym, reading, hobbies, cleaning, family stuff, seeing mates, occasional nights out etc are more important uses of my time.

If I had more time then sure I'd see more, but this is what works for me and keeps me in check. Try for yourself and see what works.
