Married for 10 years, I’m 40, she’s 35. After only a few months of lurking, reading the sidebar material and implementing just a handful of RP ideas in my life, I’m seeing marked improvement in my outlook on life and in my marriage. However, now that I’m making moves to create the kind of life I want to live, I’m seeing that my long term goals and my wife’s may not be aligned.

Now she’s no unicorn but she is a pretty great person. She has been very loyal to me through some really difficult times and has responded very well to recent RP related changes (shit tests are up but that’s expected) so it seems short-sighted to just split and go my own way. What I’d like to do is talk with her about the direction I’m taking my life now and if she’s on board, great. If not we’ll go our separate ways.

But these newfound RP ideas suggest that might not be the best move.

On the one hand, I’m enjoying being married a lot more these past few months and I don’t want to jeopardize our progress by dropping a bomb like that too soon. On the other hand, I don’t want to burn another year making the improvements and changes I need to, only to find out she doesn’t have the same long term vision.

I know that MRP is all about action, not words but it seems like I could potentially waste a whole lot of time by not bringing this up with her as soon as possible.

So the question is, how do you know if or when to initiate that kind of conversation? And what, other than contacting a lawyer, should I do to prepare?
