I usually call my wife at lunch because she feels lonely at home (and she blames me for it. I should tell her to find ways to not feel lonely, but that's another discussion). Some days I don't have anything to talk to her except to ask if she's feeling ok (she's 8 weeks pregnant, and has related illnesses like body pains, digestive issues and the sorts). I called her as a chore today, and wanted to end the call quickly. After about 5 minutes into the call, I started to say I should get back to work, but stopped it in half because she had started talking something.

She: Do you have any urgent work?

Me : Yeah. I have to go in another 5 10 minutes (spineless thing to say after I had started saying I have to go). It's really busy down here today (No busy work. I just wanted to not be on the line not having anything to say).

She: So you're not even talking 5 minutes these days in lunch? (During BP, I used to talk to her every day for around 30 minutes during lunch. Many a times, I wouldn't have anything to say, so she'd get pissed because she wanted me to have something to talk about)

Me : These days the work has been busy.

She: So? When I go to India you'd still say the same thing at lunch and not talk to me? (I'm sending her to India after her first trimester)

Me : Definitely. Because I'm a bad guy! (Lame A&A attempt)

She: I want a real answer from you. Don't give me Definitely.

Me : It's just very busy here today (should have probably said yes, if it's busy I'd say the same thing even if you're in India)

She: You know, I completely hate being here in the US, but I'm staying here only for you. You can go if you are busy, but you don't know how to say that to me. Learn to understand what mood and mindset others are and know how to talk to people. Learn to talk properly to me. You are doing many things wrong. You need to change yourself in many ways.

Me: (I'm silent, trying not to engage)

She: Did you hear what I said? What do you say to that?

Me: I understand what you're saying and how you're feeling.

She: So what do you say to that? Will you change yourself?

Me: Alright (At this point, I'm thinking that I did do this badly. I should have handled this whole situation better. I don't sound beaten. I just say to myself that I should indeed improve myself, but not because she says. Because I need to) .

She: Ok. Go now.

Me: Bye.

Typing this conversation out, I'm feeling enraged at myself. I know how badly I handled this, and how I didn't maintain an ounce of frame. I would like some advice on how to handle such conversations. Particularly, the times when I try to not engage and she asking me to respond.

Off the bat, I realize a few things I did wrong. I shouldn't have made a call to her without planning what I'll talk. I'm also misunderstanding or applying stoic/silence wrong, and look like I'm too scared to respond. At times, I'm also silent because I'm evaluating how best to respond to her. Also, because I don't want to argue, I end up saying I will change myself a lot. I know that's not at all what not engaging is. I would like to know better.

Thanks.
