Hi all, I feel bad admitting what a lousy fighting style I have. As a married woman in my late 30s, I should know better by now. But I still find myself mimicking the super unhealthy kinds of fights I saw my parents having when I was a child (they are divorced now).
Specifically, I find myself imitating my mother. She was never able to fight about just one thing: no, every time she fought with my dad, she had to summarize and analyze his alleged bad patterns of behavior. She would deliver these really detailed, super-logical judgements of him at the top of her lungs, and I remember lying in bed thinking wow, that's so convincing, mom has a brilliant point!
My father is a good man. My husband is a good man. Both have flaws. Both have a tendency to clam up when they feel attacked. I'm not close enough to my father to really know why. I'm close enough to my husband to know that he's angry and doesn't want to blow up at me.
Anyway, I guess I need advice on how to fight better. This comes up i would say once or twice a year -- a situation where we just disagree on how to do things and it escalates into a real fight. And even when I bite my tongue, I feel my mind working out a monologue about how my husband is wrong, how he s done this before, etc. And it's just a horrible feeling, like being stuck in a rut. I don't even think my monologue is necessarily inaccurate but it sure is unhelpful.
Any advice? And Jungians out there? I feel like there is some great theory of animus out there that I can't remember.
