This is Christina Hoff Sommers, while she considers herself an equality feminist she's writes books and speaks on how modern feminism hurts men and boys, and how it's basically corrosive to modern society.

She's a rare arm of feminism that actually battles the radical parts of feminism to make it somewhat more reasonable, a good ally for the MRM and basically anyone who believes in actual equality.

Respect to her! Sexual violence and rape are serious matters that must be addressed but the 'everything is rape crowd' really muddy the waters. They pit women (helpless victims) and men (animalistic perpetrators) against each other, when we need to talk and work together. Even the 188,000 statistic was shocking to me and anything reasonable that can make that lower is a good thing.

Along the same lines, Slate magazine just caught on fire due to this article:

So it seems, if you use the same insane "because I felt bad" standard for rape, upwards of 40% of all "sexual violence" is female on male. This is problematic, because of course if she gets tipsy and we have sex, and in the morning I am not as hot as I looked with 3 Fuzzy Navels in her, RAPE!!! On the other hand, if I am disgusted with my poor choices after I sober up, live with it pal. Man up. And so forth.

It would be silly, if not for the real consequence of jail, and the real possibility of rape that does not involve Appletinis.

I'm confused by her numbers.

Using the "1.3 million rapes in 2010" number:

There are about 310 million people in the US, roughly 160 million of them are women. If there were 1.3 million rapes in 2010, this would work out to 0.81% of all US women were raped in 2010. Assuming a life-span of 75 years, this would work out to a 61% chance that a woman would get raped in her lifetime - this is at odds with the "1 in 5" statistic.

Using the "188,000 rapes in 2010" number:

This would work out to 0.125% of all US women were raped in 2010. Assuming a life-span of 75 years, this would work out to a 8.8% chance that a woman would get raped in her lifetime - this is also at odds with the "1 in 5" statistic. (Update: the 188,000 number is also misleading, since it includes both male and female victims. The survey claims "169,370" rapes where women were the victims, which would put the lifetime risk at 7.9%.)

They must be assuming a number of something like 400,000-500,000 women raped per year.

Note: the math gets a little more complicated if you take account of the fact that a woman can be raped more than once in her lifetime. I didn't include that in my math. For example, if every woman who was raped was raped three times in her lifetime, then the "1.3 million rapes per year" could agree with the "1 in 5 in her lifetime" number.

Also, the crime chart shows some odd numbers. 2001 says 248,250 rapes. 2008 says 125,920 rapes. 2009 says 188,380 rapes. That seems strange to me, since I'd expect some level of consistency. Instead, rapes were cut in half from 2001 to 2008, and then we see a big 50% increase in rapes from 2008 and 2009. It makes me wonder what's going on with the numbers, or if the definition of rape changed between 2008 and 2009.
