I've talked to young men who are double amputees from IED Blasts that complain less than these bitches do.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. Imagine those guys coming back home to this horseshit.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
People who have seen real pain don't usually want to talk about it. I've known a lot of guys that went to war, and they didn't mention what they went through.
[–]10J18R1A 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Some of my best friends I've known since childhood are marines (I went air force) and when they came back from overseas, they were really like "don't ask me shit about it". You could see it in their face...pain isn't held up for attention.
[–]dvrzero 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Is the opposite true? Braggart marines probably saw nothing?
[–]10J18R1A 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Depends on what they're bragging about, but I'd be skeptical.
[–]Manuel_S 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Old veterans (early 70s) who went through war didn't say shit about it.
They just drank to comrades and sometimes hanged out with mates.
[–]misanthropeguy 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And a lot of them ended up homeless. I'd say that there is a middle ground somewhere, but honestly, the answer is less war.
[–]guitarguypa 27 points28 points29 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The 'click' of a hammer going back, that's the trigger warning I pay attention to.
[–]Manuel_S 15 points16 points17 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Who gives a fuck?
People who need trigger warnings are weak. If I am shocked, its my problem.
Children excluded of course.
[–]ejtnjin 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's basically what this article is arguing.
[–]1mrust 15 points16 points17 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Trigger warnings in that context say to me "I can't handle reality."
Please shield me, because I am so weak. Protect me because I am a woman and deserving of your protection.

I think it's less about that and more about control. It's the same reason religious people get offended, they want to control the mainstream discourse.
[–]1mrust 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think it's more about turning off the constant stream of validation. Don't show me these bad things which upset me. Bombard me with meaningless feel-good images.
[–]misanthropeguy 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
yeah, I think I'm more thinking of the people who write these kinds of things rather than the audience. But its a give and take thing, people wouldn't write this kind of nonsense if there weren't idiots to read it and believe it has value.

I think this is about the only sane thing I've seen come out of someone who claims to do 'gender studies' mouth in a long time.
Trigger warnings are a crock of shit. If someone in such a class cant hack it when talking about anorexia or torture or some shit like that then they probably shouldn't be getting a degree in that anyway. Imagine if we gave engineering degrees to dudes who cant comprehend newtonian physics?
[–]garlicextract 16 points17 points18 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Engineers are mostly men and they actually have shit to do :p
Quite a departure from a Women's/Gender studies major.
[–]dvrzero 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Seriously what is gender studies. What's the pay grade like? Say one has a master's degree and is debt free... What's their yearly net gain?
I know money isn't everything... But let's talk numbers for a tick.

I had a traumatic experience in high school when I failed to grasp the basics of calculus. A degree in physical sciences should come with a trigger warning: might encounter calculus. Except that I'm not a pussy ass idiot. Instead, I chose chemistry and nailed the fuck out of that which once scared me.
[–]Endorsed ContributorRedBigMan 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah... except Women would expect you to change chemistry to make it so you dont need calculus...
I have a subset of chemistry they can do without calculus... it's called cooking.

Trigger warnings are designed for people who have uncontrolled, extreme emotional reactions to particular subject matter -- meaning those suffering from PTSD (which is a controversial and often-misdiagnosed "disorder" in its own right) or other traumatic experiences.
In the area of mental health, a trigger is something which causes instant distress in a vulnerable person. If you know what can trigger a bad reaction, you can try to avoid those triggers in the same way that someone with an allergy might take steps to avoid dogs. The author adds a warning in recognition of strong writing or images which could unsettle those with mental health difficulties. They exist so readers can choose whether or not to read any further. It usually starts with "trigger warning" in bold. It has to be carefully written so it isn't a trigger itself. (Source: "Trigger warnings: What do they do?" -- BBC)

Most people don't have that type of problem, and if they do, they need to see a skilled therapist to deal with it.
The idea of "trigger warnings" made a marginal amount of sense on feminist blogs, considering that many women who are abuse and/or rape survivors might understandably gravitate toward "empowerment" as a reaction to their issues. It's only "marginal" because by catering explicitly to abuse/rape survivors, you're doing three things:
Coddling them and condescending to them as if survivors of such trauma don't have the sense to know what will or won't "trigger" them -- and you somehow know better than they do
Creating an illusion that abuse/rape victims are so psychologically fragile that they'll automatically fall apart at the mention of such scenarios on the page, and
Psychopathologizing (making someone seem "crazy") everyone else who reads it, thereby creating an environment where everyone is "at risk" or "in recovery" or some other therapist jargon that adds to peoples' sense of being traumatized little girls who can't deal with the real world.
The deeper problem is that armchair psychoanalysis is a sporting activity for many people. If you disagree with someone else, you're "crazy" (example: call someone an "aspie" instead of telling them they're not cool). If you have something to say that is harsh or deals with the harder sides of life, you have to hold their hand like your name was Mommy or Daddy and tell people that they might be "triggered" by it.
It's the quintessential "first-world problem" for people who feel compelled to find ways to upset themselves. Upon achieving this feat, it's a small step for such a person to live out the Hollywood fantasy of flying into a self-righteous rage or dissolving into a blubbering mass of melodramatic emotionality. Trigger warnings are a form of self-manipulation as a prelude to doing the same in the presence of others, with a tidy little label to make it seem legitimate, when in the majority of cases, the root mental illness is little more than narcissism.
[–]widec 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Even in cases where people have legit PTSD, they are trained to have a softer reaction to their triggers, since they can't possibly guarantee the removal of all of them. Most people who complain about trigger warnings should really look into this therapy themselves. If they don't need it they're probably full of shit.
[–]dvrzero 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think trigger warnings are really "bring the drama I have popcorn " tags. Discuss.

If you're on the internet and need trigger warnings, fuck off and go back to reading your Highlights magazine.
Man Gallant is such a beta. What a tool.

Who even takes that seriously?
I'm embarrassed by the column that the student from Rutgers wrote. Of course it had to be from my fucking school. The amount of entitled little shitheads roaming around this campus is absurdly high.

How does he equate trigger warnings with censorship? How are they different from age ratings for films?
[–]ejtnjin 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
She is talking about discussions in college classes where people become upset at the possibility that someone might be offended or reminded of a traumatic experience. She isn't trying to discuss this stuff with middle schoolers, but adults.
[–]HalfwySandwch 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well in the US that is a bad point considering the MPAA is a completely arbitrary rating system that no one can predict and leaves us with less access to films we would otherwise want to see.

Putting "Warning:Gore, Death, Animal Cruelty," is something I have seen even on 4Chan back in like '06. Putting "Trigger Warning: Abuse" is something I have only seen recently.
The point the author is making is about a classroom, where trigger warnings are nonsense. Education is not a game of putting up walls. If I need to teach a lesson about rape in a sociology course, should the people triggered by rape be excused from the lesson? the test? Not be graded at all on the topic? That is bullshit. If they can't handle the content of a course they shouldn't be in the course, or they should fail.
Having the emotional strength to adjust to reality should be a precursor to any course that might trigger you, just like having the mental fortitude to handle of the stress of the MCATs if you want to be a doctor. You shouldn't be allowed to be a doctor in lieu of an MCAT just because taking them gives you anxiety.
As for outside the classroom, to each their own. If feminist websites with nothing important to say want to add warnings to all their articles, let them, but the rest of the world doesn't have to play that game.

If seeing something upsetting makes you unable to think properly for any length of time you need to be locked the fuck away. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Whatever happened to people taking ownership of their emotional response?

No, I just got over it. I've been through some shit but I don't let it own me. Nobody I've ever talked to has been through anything like what I have. There is a difference between letting your past own you and moving on from traumatic experiences.

My boss was military for 20 years, he's seen some shit and one of the only people who I can talk to about stressful situations.
There is a world of difference between being in control of yourself and knowing how to respond to negative stimuli and "this image makes me so mad I can't think straight"
My 20s were spent in a state of perpetual rage. Reddit is like the death rattle of my "triggers"; especially when I see SRS or purely inflammatory posts on other subs.
Then I realize I have 6 pages of comment posts in the last 10 days and that's all from a phone.
My name is ______ and I'm addicted to strife.

What? She made it pretty clear how trigger warnings are unacceptable censorship.
