James 9 hours ago In one respect, when kids are involved many families would find it easier for the whole family to have the same surname. Why a hard and fast rule that it has to be the husbands'? Surely we need some case by case discretion here? If the husband's surname is say Raper and the wife's is something a little better sounding, then let's go with the wife's surname if the family feels they all need one name.

What the fuck... he even goes on to say, "it's good that they are breaking norms." Somehow I feel he wants to bring the world down to his level of misery.

On the flip side though, you'll never see an article making headlines talking about stopping the tradition of buying rings and holding wedding ceremonies.

make an educated guess: who is the boss in this relationship?

[–]KublerRossWasWrong 27 points28 points29 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Her circle of friends.

Ughhh, it makes me sick to my stomach when I see a guy wifing up a 40 yo post-wall hag when he could easily be balls deep in 18yo puss everyday if he had the balls to do so.

Back in the late 90s, right after I graduated highschool, I was dating a girl whose parents were 70s kids and extremely into the hippie movement, and she had a weird hypenated name as her parents combined theirs. We've been going out for a 2 years and a half and she was talking about marriage and all that for a while. She was odd, having very traditional ideas on one hand and then turning around with a whackjob idea the next.

Anyway, I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of marrying her because the more I got to know her, the more her parents' way of thinking seeped through into every pore. So I took to tweaking her when she broached marriage just for fun and to keep her off balance. She had a chip on her shoulder about the name thing, got into a big row about it with me, the inequality, yada yada yada.

So I responded, "My wife will take my name."

She blew up, going on about how she's not taking my name, and rehashed all the arguments.

When she was done, I said "That's okay. I didn't say you have to take my name. I just said my wife will."

That shut her up and was one of the few arguments I won against her. Eventually we broke up anyway about other things but when I come visit the parents, I still see her or some mutual friend around and she's on her 3rd marriage 15 years after highschool.

First two husbands she took a hypenated triple name (not so with the 3rd, she took his) and the various kids (5) are a mess of different hypenated names depending on the father.

3 last names to sign. Those poor, fucked up children. And here I am, having missed out on that, on the "love of my life" as the b-grade romantic movies tell me about HS sweethearts. Life is good.

That's hilarious. Epic schadenfreude right there.

And I bet today if you ask her if she has any regrets she'll say, "no".

Reminds me of that "Website is Down" skit where the chick wanted IT to change her lastname to Johnson-Johnson

The next thing husband is gonna hear is "I like you but I'm not in love with you tm " - she's got someone on the side for quite some time and is stepping out of the marriage.

She's already got the name change out of the way. Time to end this starter marriage and start the independent wymyn life (funded by gunpoint-enforced beta bux)!

That is failing one of the biggest shit tests ever. To let your wife run around like that after 10 years?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Always be willing to walk away. Even when you've shared 10 years and kids together.

You aren't ready to walk away?

She obviously is.

[–]1whatsazipper 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Don't get married. Locks the man down, and she gets the upper hand by default. Walking away for a man in a marriage comes with a loaded gun ready to fire at him.

Never remove your most powerful tool.

Marriage has been made to be nothing more than a failed shit test. The best you can hope for is marry from a culture that still values marriage.

Marriage has been made to be nothing more than a failed shit test.

Yeah, no kidding. I don't know how guys still go through with it, especially if they subscribe to this sub.

One side point: if a man has a last name like Focker or Basturd then he should alpha up and change his last name to something he'd be proud of his kids having. Like Dagger.

[–]KublerRossWasWrong 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Growing up, I was always called 'Dark Fucker' on account of my name being Dirk Focker. As soon as I was old enough, I had it changed. Both names, actually. I didn't want too much confusion though, so I kept my first name relatively close. You should see the looks on the faces of the women at the DMV when my record comes up on their screen as 'Dagger, Dick.'"

I have no words.

The only reasons I can think of why anyone would do such a thing is:

a) because they are bored and want their whims attended to / want attention

b) because they want to bang someone from their past and the maiden name will give an impression of being divorced

[–]PerniciousOne 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I suppose she would not get upset that he wants to get a post-nuptual agreement. Since we are changing the terms of our marriage contract, there should be some protections for him.

lol shiiit.

[–]DoubleKnee 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My now ex-wife said that same stupid shit about 3 months before we were to get married. "I'm going to hyphenate my last name."

I think she was feeling brave because her mother was standing in the kitchen with her. What is notable about that is the the former mother in law did not hyphenate her last name, she took her husband's surname.

I looked the bride to be straight in the eye and said, "Girl, if you want to hyphenate, that's cool with me. It just won't involve MY last name."

My mother in law actually dropped the plate that she was washing and it broke in the sink.

The ex took my last name. And it was one of the things she also kept in the divorce.

[–]Endorsed ContributorrebuildingMyself 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well played. It's nothing more than a shit test for a woman to accept all the traditions where she benefits and balk at what little compromise she needs to do in return.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here in Quebec it's simple. Changing our name is not even an option. I can't say i'm totally happy with this, this should be a matter of personnal choice, but eh.

[–]ScannerSloppy 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Any time I see a woman with a hyphenated name, I assume that she's a shreiking cunt with emotionally crippling daddy issues. I'm usually right. How is keeping your father's name a strike against patriarchy anyway?

[–]Endorsed ContributorrebuildingMyself 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's nothing more than a failed shit test.

[–]Throbie 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Is it weird that I want my wife to hyphenate? I've always wanted to name my first daughter after my grandma and her initials are AS. My last name starts with S, and I don't want to give shitty children any ammunition against my unborn daughter. Is this beta behavior by red pill standards?

[–]ScannerSloppy 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just be aware of the political connotations. No one will assume anything about grandmothers or initials, but they might assume that you're beta.
