The best part of this is the comments, where people are basically trying to argue with MATH.

It's a pretty simple formula. Let's say you want to have kids. To make this easy, we'll say it takes 1 year to have a kid (3 months of trying to get pregnant, then a 9 month pregnancy). You want to avoid the cliff that happens at 35... yes, you can have kids after 35, but it's not a great idea and you want to avoid it if at all possible. This means the latest you can conceive is 34.

Now let's say you want to have two kids, because most people who want kids seem to want more than one, with one year in between. That means you have to conceive your first kid at 32 and your second one at 34.

You're (hopefully) not just going to try to get pregnant with some random guy you find on the street. Let's assume you'd date for a year, get married, be married for a year before trying to conceive.

Basically, stretching this window to the maximum AND assuming a fairly quick dating/engagement/marriage, the latest you can meet the man of your dreams and still have two kids while avoiding the cliff is 29. That's all assuming you meet at 29, married at 31, first kid by 33 (conceived at 32), second kid by 35.

Now, take the statistic that marriages between people under 25 are more likely to end in divorce. But let's say 23, because you could be dating someone at 23 and marry them at 25.

Tl;dr: That means, essentially, women have from between the ages of 23 and 29 to secure a mate. Put your career first if you want, but understand the implications of doing so.

Yeah, reading the comments made me cringe. Funny thing is, if it were a blog post about careers, very few people would disagree. You can't fuck around and wait til you are 35 before you decide that you want to work as a banker at Goldman Sachs. You have to get started when you were in high school. You have to get into one of the tier 1 colleges. You have to get the right internships. You have to have the highest GPAs. And you have to get into a prestigious company in your targeted field of employment right when you graduate. You can't take several years to backpack across Europe and do drugs until you are 35, and then decide that you want an elite career. Life doesn't work that way. Everybody knows that. But when it comes to relationships, sex, and reproduction, they just put their heads in the sand and hamster away.

That article is golden

The good news here is that a large body of research shows that you will gain more happiness by being married than by having a good job. Yes, you should not have to choose between a good job and marriage. But this column is not about what is fair or what is just. It is about what is real.

You have a biological clock that does not pay attention to issues of social justice. You cannot control your biological clock and you cannot control the workplace. But you can control where you spend your time and energy, and you should look hard for a husband early on. Line up the marriage first, then the career.

[–]thesnowflake 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the problem is all research shows men staying happy in marriage while women's happiness declines over time.. perhaps the OP of this article is misinformed

My favourite part is the bold as well. Any woman having trouble 'finding herself' and figuring out what she wants should read this article every morning before breakfast.

Holy shit. Those commenters. Like absolute fucking children.

I knew those that follow the feminist line were self absorbed and not forward thinking at all but I had no idea it was that bad.

From one of the links in the writeup:

Does the risk of Down syndrome increase with the mother’s age? Yes. The risk of Down syndrome increases with the mother’s age (7):

At age 25, the risk of having a baby with Down syndrome is 1 in 1,250. At age 30, the risk is 1 in 1,000. At age 35, the risk is 1 in 400. At age 40, the risk is 1 in 100. At age 45, the risk is 1 in 30. Even though the risk is greater as the mother’s age increases, about 80 percent of babies with Down syndrome are born to women under age 35. This is because younger women have more babies than older women (1).

Sobering numbers that do not lie. Our society is doing our women and ourselves a huge disservice. Other regions of the world and other societies are living in reality, and this may come to bite our society to ass in the years to come.

But fuck it, right? If girls in ther mid-20s insist on carousel riding I guess we go along for the ride...makes you weep for more patriarchical systems tho where this reality would have been properly dealt with.

There's no risk if you abort the fetus.

[–]lord-denning 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Fair enough point. But as my group of friends grows older I have seen enough heartbreak to know that there is some kind of disconnect between women's ability to give birth and what they think is their ability to give birth at an older age.

I agree: people need to be well informed to make good decisions.

[–]lord-denning 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. And until recently I was not aware of the degree to which misinformation and misdirection abound.

[–]Clauderoughly 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism was designed, and built by predominately man hating, upper class lesbians.

It makes perfect sense that feminism fucks up the lives of normal women who want kids.

It's because the people who were give the advise had no concept of what it was to have kids, and not be a rich person. Or they were angry, man hating lesbians who were never going to have kids.

It's like going to the catholic church for how to best fuck a woman. None of them are going to give you any sort of practical, useful advice.

[–]umbilicaljane 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This makes tons of sense, and I understand the facts and formulas behind it all.

I'm curious though. I haven't met a quality man who would ever date an uneducated woman. Some of the first things they would ask "Where did you go to school?" or "What do you do?" And without a diploma or degree of some sort, it would be very difficult to get a good job. Education doesn't guarantee a good job, but it could broaden opportunities. No man I've ever met would date a woman who is not financially stable. They would be embarrassed to date someone making minimum flipping burgers or bagging groceries. And that's step 1, isn't it? If you don't get to date, there's absolutely no way to get to the marriage and children stage. Especially since you wouldn't be able to financially contribute to a growing family. Those women would just be written off as worthless gold digging housewives and whatnot.

I've seen this happen quite a few times. The article does indeed contain sound advice, but I think the likelihood of it happening is a legitimate concern as well.

I'd like to hear your thoughts, TRP.

This is an honest inquiry and I think I saw you around r/fpua, so I'll do my best here.

Just as you write, one of the first things I ask someone, male or female, is the what school/what did you study thing. I've been trying to wean myself of this, precisely because of the message it sends to girls like you.

The important thing to know is that I am not asking this because I care. I mean, of course I care as a conversational partner, but I might as well be asking what your favorite food is. It doesn't factor into my calculations.

Rather, I'm asking because: it's a safe topic. I'm overeducated myself, so I feel comfortable talking about it. I also know that this is what people ask each other when they first meet each other, so you've had this conversation before, so you know how to talk about it. It's a conversational crutch, and a bad one, because it's unsexy (note how PUA's, when asked their careers, give bullshit answers like "disposable lighter repairmen," or "millionaire playboy." My brother, when asked his major, will reply "dance psychology," which sounds close enough to a real thing to fool people sometimes).

As for the financially stable thing, maybe I'm weird, but most guys just don't care. Financial profligacy is a huge red flag, but if a girl has a crappy job and lives with her parents...that's perfectly fine. My worst oneitis ever was a part-time vet tech who lived with her parents. Any guy looking for marriage and kids is probably going for a relatively high-powered career, or is content with a relatively poor (because one income) standard of living. He'd rather his wife take care of his kids than minimum wage daycare strangers.

Finally, a word on intelligence: much has been said about how it is\is not attractive. If you're familiar with TRP you probably already know about its pitfalls. I'd rather talk about a positive aspect: the ability to provide intellectual companionship. I could write a lot about this, but it comes down to: does she get my jokes?

[–]umbilicaljane 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Thank you, dropit_sphere for your elaborate answer. Oddly enough, I think may have seen you around fpua too!

Where would I find these quality alpha men interested in marriage and kids and won't care about wifey's employment status that you speak of? And how could I place myself on their radar?

[–]dropit_sphere 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Where would I find these quality alpha men interested in marriage and kids and won't care about wifey's employment status that you speak of?

You know, as I think about it, they're actually hard to find. It's not that they're necessarily rare, more that they're snapped up quickly when they become available.

However, the situation is not as bad as it sounds. There are raw materials all over the place---the doesn't-know-he's-handsome chill guy who isn't a player but hasn't really thought about marriage either, the in-shape grad student who would be alpha but can't stop thinking about his thesis, the new engineer who's now absorbed the no-bullshit blunt engineering culture a little too well to be able to vibe with people---none of these guys are "quality alpha men interested in marriage." However, all of them are close. Literally given one minor life event, they could instantly transform.

Further, most guys tend to not really understand how attractive they are/aren't/could be. They can sort of be excused for this, because it varies widely according to their behavior (i.e. game).

Further, there's the idea of the situational alpha. Yes, the grad student can't participate in group conversation when the latest new album comes up. But in the medieval history department, he's funny, insightful, ambitious, and confident.

There are two girls who have a shot at this guy:

  • the girl who's in the bar after he graduates, has time to listen to new music again, and can participate in bar conversations normally again. She has about ten seconds before the competition comes out.
  • the girl who was in the medieval history department and has been attracted to him the whole time because she's in a situation to really see him. She has about two years before the competition has any idea that there's anything here.

So: I am notnotnot saying "Lower your standards for how attracted you should be." I think dalrock is spot on here: you should be really attracted to the dude. I am saying that a) guys can change rather drastically to suddenly meet that standard, and b) with a lot of guys, I suspect getting to know them---not necessarily by dating them---will give you a chance to see them at their best.

As for getting on their radar, being as hot as possible is never a bad thing, but you already knew that. Aside from that, becoming a your-age-version of Sara Crewe is hard to beat. Traits to which I refer specifically, from the wikipedia entry:

Despite being pampered all her life in India, Sara herself is very intelligent, polite, and creative.

Sara's friendliness and love for pretending and storytelling makes her popular with most of the school's students.

[Despite becoming an orphaned beggar abused by her teachers, she] continues to be kind and polite to everyone, including her offenders.

The common thread here is responsible and generous use of power, which is attractive in men as well. Chivalry is attractive because it's a guy with a sword(power) being responsible and generous with it. The pussification of the modern male is why chivalry is now a joke---no power, no chivalry.

There is no word that I can think of for the female version; "modesty" is probably closest but has too much baggage attached. The point is that Sara in the above has a great deal of power by virtue of being rich (at first), intelligent, imaginative, and well-traveled---and, secure in her father's care, she freely gives of her gifts to all.

The same goes for sexual power: the attractive version of modesty is being hotter than everyone else in the room, and treating everyone there kindly. It can be tiring carrying everyone's self-esteem on your back, which is why a strong relationship with an alpha male father/brother/lover is helpful.

[–]lord-denning 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Getting a degree is not the issue - focussing on a high powered career to the detriment of family life is the potential red flag. Though this is not TRP canon, in my view it is great to know a girl has gone to a good school because it provides comfort that any kids are less likely to be dummies.

I have friends with wives with stellar degrees who are now involved in philanthropy / corporate giving, education reform, etc. She can use her obvious smarts, and still has plenty of time to support on the household front.

There was an old joke about going to school about getting the "MRS" degree as in Mrs. so and so...I think there may be something to it.

The good news here is that a large body of research shows that you will gain more happiness by being married than by having a good job.

Only if you compare married people with single people. Studies with a more correct, longitudinal design however found that getting married did not make people any happier and that satisfaction with the relationship actually decreased over time. Even though this research was biased in favor of married people because they only included those who stayed married.
