Every time I hear about one of these "matriarchal" societies, it turns out that they're still in the stone age.

My view on them is this: It only lasted because of their relative isolation (marauding armies didn't consider them worth the trouble, I guess), as well as the closeness of traditional village life.

But note these features as well:

Men have a defined role in society -- and wouldn't you know, it's "provider!" They do all the hard work, while women maintain the household.
Men get regular sex via "walking marriages." I strongly doubt that blue balls or nuclear rejections are common. In modern American society, men don't even get this for all their trouble.

I suspect that matriarchy is like communal living; it works best on a small scale, with lots of extended family and entrenched, traditional roles.

Attempts to scale up the communal arrangements to fit industrialized society (communism) only create widespread corruption and poverty; likewise, scaling up the village matriarchy to fit modern conditions (Marriage 2.0) breeds caddishness and resentment.

Besides, their culture was stagnant for so long, never becoming a large civilization like their Han and Manchu neighbors to their north. Perhaps men will do more than the bare minimum if they had an incentive?

Interesting read - trouble with this though is like a lot of anthropology stuff it is dominated by left wing feminist idiots who have no duty to the truth.

There could be things that are overlooked because it didn't fit the anthropologists view.

Lots of evidence this kind of evidence suppression and confirmation bias goes on a lot in this field.

But what does this mean for our "red pill" theories regarding social organization? This site says that the Mosuo prove that marriage and male dominance aren't universal, since the Mosuo want to preserve their way of life despite the intrusion of modernity.
