Today, I am concerned about a new trend that is quickly spreading among our teen girls. I am referring to something referred to on websites, tumbler and among girl talk that is called the thigh gap." One needs only to look at various websites to see that this is a far-reaching concern. The thigh gap refers to the space between the thighs that teen girls are striving for. Apparently, this started trending after the Victoria Secret fashion show in December. The teen girls just don't want their thighs to touch. This odd obsession is certainly being fueled by social media like many other teen trends both positive and negative.

I'm a guy, and I squat, and my thighs barely touch when I stand completely straight with my feet together (yes, the notion was so foreign that I went to the bathroom and checked). Apparently though, you can get so fat, that walking causes inner thigh chaffing. This is, of course, not a problem but watch carefully if your kid chooses not to be a miserable tub of goo -- that just spells trouble.

It works in Japan and Korea. Last time I checked Japan is sporting a sub 10% obesity rate in women ages 20-29.

Also don't forget the necessity of passive-aggressive fat shaming.

Not so sure.

It can't be that women in the West are just immune to fat shaming. They're just as susceptible. Guilt-tripping and shaming can only do so much, though.

They're not immune, but there is safety in numbers. Fatties in the US can retreat into the fatosphere (this exsists, just go over to /r/bodyacceptance and look around) and convince themselves that society is oppressing them, that "big is beautiful", that you can be "healthy at every weight", etc. They can then scream into that echo chamber all manner of nonsense until they actually believe it.

There is nothing like that in Asia, at least not yet. No overweight women are on TV prancing about and declaring, "These are a real woman's curves!" There are no fat acceptance groups. There is only the collectivist desire to fit in and an appreciation of aesthetic beauty.

This is true but the support groups don't exist, on the same scale, for men. Yet, you still find that the US has a higher rate of obesity.

Peer pressure can play a positive role.

However, if you're really going to lose weight just because of peer pressure, you're susceptible to leaving a lot up to what other people think and say you should do.

Would you recommend the same motivation to guys trying to get in shape on /r/TheRedPill?

Also, as I said earlier, setting the bar as high as models or people with the thigh gap, which seems more like a matter of hip width than thinness, could be just as discouraging. People start exercising, waiting to see rapid weight-loss, and then quit if they don't see that happen. If they did it because they found a sport they liked or actually wanted to be healthy, they might follow through on exercising and eating better.

If it's really women's health you're worried about, passive-aggressive fat-shaming and peer pressure are not going to be a sustainable motivators. Having a concrete, attainable, short-term goal that emphasizes fitness over being thin, would be preferable.

This is only technically true. Japanese men have, when adjusted for smaller average body size, an obesity rate only slightly lower than the rate for American men. Americans do have more outliers though.

You may ask why the men aren't as thin as the women. The answer is: no fat shaming for men.

I am a man. I have narrow hips (size 28 jeans). I also do squats 3 times a week. My thighs barely touch when I stand with my feet together.

It's a matter of fatness.

If it's really women's health you're worried about, passive-aggressive fat-shaming and peer pressure are not going to be a sustainable motivators.

It can be very sustainable. Like I said, Asian women are skinny and will continue to be skinny due in part to culture-wide, passive-aggressive fat shaming and peer pressure. They are also some of the longest lived people on the planet.

And in terms of public health, being overweight is FAR more taxing on the body, and thus public health care, than being underweight.

It's also the reason a lot of people are unmotivated. If you set the bar as high as they do on MindTheGap 1.0, people are likely to just choose being fat.

It makes way more sense to just motivate people by showing them what's healthy. It's something you have to choose for yourself.
